Researcher / Writer – Home Improvements (including some Sustainability and Energy), Investigative Research Team

We have an opportunity for a great researcher / writer with impeccable writing skills (print and online) who is interested in working in one of the most popular and high-performing areas of our home content - home improvements and renovations.

This fantastic role will suit a researcher / writer early in their career with a passion for helping people negotiate the trickiest consumer decisions through great advice.

You'll also be working closely with our energy researcher and together you'll develop sustainability content in this growing priority area for Which? - from green energy and home heating to home insulation.

You'll be using your research skills to seek out the key areas of consumer detriment in the home improvement industry and delivering online and print articles that help people make the right choices when they improve their homes.

Do you want to make a difference to consumers' lives through the research you do, the detriment you uncover and the advice you give? You'll be working with a team of 35 including investigative researchers, data journalists and market analysts.

What we offer

We're all about working with our researchers to make them the best they can be – giving good learning and development opportunities, and from working with more experienced colleagues.

Our rewards package is one of the best out there. You'll get 28 days' annual leave, an interest-free season ticket loan, life assurance, and a pension scheme that increases to 11% after you've been here for a year.

You'll also get the chance to develop your career, with a big focus on internal development. And you can work every day knowing that you're playing your part in making consumers as powerful as the organisations they deal with.

We're currently working remotely as an organisation. However, when we're back in the office you'll find it modern, relaxed and friendly (before lockdown we enjoyed fresh fruit, a subsidised canteen, great facilities for cyclists and lunchtime runners, two free healthy meals per week and a roof terrace to enjoy them on). Read our candidate pack to find out more about the amazing benefits on offer!

What you'll be doing

You'll be working with other researchers on original investigations based on our own in-depth research. These could range from a survey of the best and worst double glazing companies (rated by their customers) or working with expert furniture assessors to review fitted kitchens.

You'll be turning your research into compelling content - mainly for our website, but we'll need someone who can turn their hand to news print content, some print features, and working with teams across the organisation, such as our press team to PR the best stories.

Many of our successes start with our comprehensive consumer panel. Take our recent reviews of kitchens and fitted wardrobes - our unique insight comes from member case studies, undercover research and or in-house experts.

The quality of your research, analysis and content will play a vital role in upholding our well-deserved reputation for fairness, thoroughness and reliability.

What you will ideally have

You will ideally have a track record in primary research and great writing skills, as well as an understanding of consumer concerns. Ideally you'll have worked in producing lifestyle content, but in this junior role it is more important to have strong enthusiasm to cover this wide and exciting brief.

You will also need you to be able to turn a hand to other topic areas, as part of working in a team that covers a diverse range.

We'd like you to have:

  • Ability to manage multiple short and long term projects
  • Solid analytical and primary research skills and good attention to detail
  • Ability to write for a consumer audience
  • Digital writing experience
  • Experience of working with consumer insights would be beneficial

Please click 'APPLY' now and submit your up to date CV and covering letter outlining why you feel this role would be great for you and what you can offer by Sunday 13 December 2020. *Please note applications without cover letters will not be considered*
