Job Details

The Economist Group is the leading source of analysis on international business and world affairs.

We deliver our information through a range of formats, from newspapers to podcasts to digital services. What binds us together is the objectivity of our opinion, the originality of our insight and our advocacy of economic and political freedom around the world.

The Economist is looking for an experienced audio producer to make The Economist Asks podcast, an in-depth interview show with transatlantic appeal, as well as to contribute to our other feature shows, Money Talks and Babbage.

The ideal candidate will write concise and insightful briefs and scripts, secure high-profile guests and produce news-making, as well as entertaining, interviews under tight deadlines.

The responsibility of the features producer is to showcase, in audio, the best qualities of The Economist's distinctive brand of journalism and drive subscriptions by reaching broader audiences with thoughtful and engaging podcasts.

An awareness of current affairs and cultural trends is vital. The successful candidate will work closely with Anne McElvoy, the host of The Economist Asks and director of Economist Radio.

The producer will be responsible for making The Economist Asks every week—developing the series, planning big-name interviews, producing reactive news-making interviews and building relationships with publicists.

They will also pitch story ideas and make items for the other feature shows. This will include a wide range of production tasks, from initial story/guest ideas, booking guests, briefing, scripting and editing for publication.

Producers will work initially remotely, collaboratively with presenters, guests and other members of the podcast production team. Attention to detail, a strong work ethic, professionalism and intra-office skills are essential.

Candidates should have a knowledge of podcasting, current affairs and also experience in producing high-profile interviews or similar work in audio.

The Economist Asks is a challenging and intimate conversation and, while The Economist has a point of view, we also contain a wide range of views, angles and challenges, so applicants should be at home in that environment and intellectually curious.

Requirements:

  • Ability to write accurate and effective briefs and engaging scripts
  •  Experience editing audio and working to tight deadlines
  • Proven track record of sound editorial judgement / background in journalism
  • Track record of booking guests and high-profile interviewees
  • Ability to work diplomatically with a wide variety of people, including high profile guests
  • Experience of innovative use of sound and a creative approach to news
  • Wide knowledge of, and strong interest in, news and current affairs
  • Proficiency at Adobe Audition or an ability to learn it quickly
  • An understanding of The Economist’s distinctive style
  • Ability to record audio in the field or the studio

Company

The Economist was first published in 1843 to take part in a “severe contest between intelligence, which presses forward, and an unworthy, timid ignorance obstructing our progress.”

Our vision of the world, our style and our whole philosophy are different. We are international, we stress the links between politics and business, we are sometimes irreverent and we are always independent.
