Job Details

New Scientist is the world’s leading weekly science and tech magazine, with five million readers across all its platforms.

With teams based in the UK, US and Australia, and also a thriving events business, we lead the way in the very best of science and technology journalism.

We now seek an exceptional, highly motivated and extremely organised individual to run our art department and to help us develop – and implement – a new visuals strategy for the next stage of the magazine’s evolution.

This is a hands-on role at the heart of our editorial team, working closely with a committed team of science and tech journalists.

You will be responsible for overseeing the design of the weekly print magazine as well as supporting and helping to evolve our digital vision, and working closely with other departments across New Scientist.

The successful candidate will have the world’s very best illustrators, typographers, photographers, videographers, infographic designers, motion graphic artists and artists in their contacts book.

They will know Adobe CC inside out and love learning new ways to use both new and existing tools. They will enjoy ripping up processes and coming up with better ones.

They will love design and want every page of our magazine to look the very best it can be, but they will also believe that the look and feel of digital is just as important as the look and feel of print.

This role requires someone who knows the difference between linear and logarithmic scale, and believe infographics should be as gorgeous as they are educational.

It also requires someone who has managed a team of designers before and know how to get the best out of them while providing them with the tools to learn and grow.

An interest or at least openness to science and technology will be a strong advantage.

Required skills, experience and aptitudes:

  • Experience working on a national magazine or newspaper
  • Self-starter
  • Excellent collaborator who enjoys working in small teams
  • Adaptability
  • An interest in improving tools and processes
  • A passion for teaching others
  • Innovative
  • Proficient in Adobe CC
  • A strong commercial instinct
  • Excellent time management and admin skills
  • Excellent communicator
  • Experience with online graphic tools
  • Experience with Canva and similar online design tools
  • Strong typography skills
  • Solid understanding of infographics
  • Understanding digital channels and how to position design online
  • Excellent retouching skills
  • Video experience a plus
  • Experience with template design and management
