Division: Content

Department: Content Research and Analysis

Job type:  9 Months to a year Fixed Term Contract, Part time (21 hours)

We’re looking for a Researcher / Writer to join our Content Research and Analysis team on a part time and fixed term basis.

Which? is the UK's consumer champion. As an organisation we're not for profit - a powerful force for good, here to make life simpler, fairer and safer for everyone.

We're the independent consumer voice that provides impartial advice, investigates, holds businesses to account and works with policymakers to make change happen.

We fund our work mainly through member subscriptions. We're not influenced by third parties – we never take advertising and we buy all the products that we test.

What you'll be doing?

Do you have a nose for a story, top-notch research and writing skills and the desire to make a difference in consumers' lives?

As a Researcher / Writer you'll be investigating and writing content for Which? magazine, our website and other channels.

The responsibilities of online platforms are a priority area for Which?, bringing together our work on fake reviews, unsafe products and online scams into a single cross organisational vision and strategy.

You will be working with colleagues across Which? including our advocacy, press and external affairs teams, to hold companies including major online players to account.

You’ll also work closely with external partners including Ofcom and the CMA, as well as the online platforms.

We'll want you to use a range of methods to research, and uncover, key issues facing consumers when buying and using online platforms. You'll then use your talent to turn your findings into clear and engaging articles, news stories and topical advice.

This could include anything from posing as a business to try to buy fake reviews, to reporting unsafe products to Amazon, Ebay and other marketplaces to see how they handle issues.

The quality of your investigative research and analysis will play a vital role in upholding our well-deserved reputation for fairness, thoroughness and reliability.

This is primarily a desk-based role, but you will be required to use your networking skills to build external relationships with key contacts, and your varied approaches to investigative research may take you out-and-about to experience issues through the eyes of the consumer.

What you will ideally have?

You need to have a track record in research and great writing skills, with understanding of writing for a consumer audience. Ideally you would have experience of writing about online platforms and retail, but more important than that is a strong interest in the topic.

This is a fixed term position, but with ambitions to deliver a lot over the period of the role, so you need to be able to confidently get to grips with new challenges and ways of working quickly, and be full of ideas from the start.

We'd like you to have:

  • Experience of managing multiple short and long term projects effectively
  • Strong analytical and primary research skills and good attention to detail
  • Proven writing skills with the ability to write for a consumer audience
  • Understanding of the issues around online platforms and retail, with ideas on how to translate this into investigative work for Which?
  • Great communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, and build strong relationships with multiple stakeholders across the organisation quickly.

About the rewards?

You get a competitive salary, 28 days' holiday, contributory pension, life assurance, private medical cover, health insurance, full Which? membership for free, 50% off making a will with Which? Wills.

About the Which? way of life?

We want you to do great work and enjoy it in a workplace that respects and empowers you.

In 2019 we were a runner up in the medium-sized organisation category for Britain's Healthiest Workplace, and we signed up to the Time to Change employer pledge that protects staff against mental health discrimination. We're also a Stonewall accredited employer.

If this sounds like the role for you then we would love to hear from you - click 'APPLY' now. Applications open until Friday 5 February 2021

At Which? we value diversity and we're committed to creating an inclusive culture where everyone is able to be themselves and to reach their full potential.

We want to receive applications from all regardless of age, gender identity, disability, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity, religion or belief, race or ethnic origin, sex, sexual orientation, transgender status, social economic background.

We believe that a diverse workforce helps us to understand and create a positive impact for consumers. We want to ensure that everybody can apply and be part of our recruitment processes, and therefore when required we make reasonable adjustments to accommodate our candidates.

Company

Working at Which? is all about balancing your expectations with ours – and that applies to everyone who works here. So what does this mean in practical terms? First of all, we’ll expect you to channel your ambition into growing our business and increasing our influence. We’ll also rely on you to stand up for what you believe in and have the courage to make the right calls.

In return, we’ll give you plenty of diverse opportunities at a company that’s growing, some great benefits and, most importantly, the chance to change peoples’ lives for the better. In short, if you can make a real difference to consumers and our members, we’ll make a real difference to your career. That way, everyone wins.
