About Us:

Construction News is the leading brand for those working in the construction industry. At the heart of what we do is our fast-paced news coverage breaking need-to-know stories on topics from cladding to modern slavery to the latest financial results.

Our day-to-day reporting takes in a wide-range of topics – including everything from football stadium plans to the latest political announcements – and we pride ourselves on the high-quality coverage of them all. Our agenda-setting news stories have been nominated for several national and industry awards and are often picked up in the national media.
Senior leaders in the construction industry look to us daily as a source of informative, reliable insight into the industry.

About the Role:

Construction News is the leading provider of news, insight, and events for the UK construction industry. CN’s News Editor plays a key role in meeting this brief.
You will oversee all CN’s digital-first news, chair the daily news meeting and decide which stories to pursue, co-ordinating reporting across the whole team. You will also decide which stories lead our output online, in print news pages, and in CN’s daily newsletters.

At heart, this role offers a fantastic opportunity to create brilliant content and inspire your direct reports as well as a wider editorial team. You will lead by example and set a high standard of quality journalism, serving the interests of our engaged audience of subscribers. Construction is a nationally important industry, and you will be able to break big stories ahead of the mainstream media.

About you:

Experienced journalist, ready to manage others as well as your own work. Relevant experience writing news material for a business audience. Skilled at building and maintaining the contacts needed to deliver exclusive stories. Copy-editing skills to ensure stories have a sharp headline, strong angle, and a clear flow of facts. Familiar with journalism law and how to write effectively about a litigious industry. Ready to offer guidance to other writers on angles and news gathering approach.  Experience of working with fast-paced, digital-first formats is preferable, as is familiarity with using analytics to help raise the performance of editorial output. The ability to tackle multiple tasks simultaneously. Ideally with an interest in the technical, financial, and political aspects of the industry.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Chairing daily news meetings, allocating stories, and tackling the first edit of news material.
  • Maintaining a calendar of foreseeable news events and monitoring the output of rival media.
  • Delivering editorial output that is legal, of high quality, and meets the needs of CN’s audience across print, digital and social media.
  • Managing your direct reports and guiding their development.
  • Collaborating with the Production Editor to ensure material is speedily readied for publication, and that CN stories achieve their full potential using analytics and social media.
  • Contributing to CN’s live events and webinars.
