Which?, Senior Investigative Researcher / Writer - Online retail (FTC)
We're looking for an investigative Researcher/Writer to join our Content Research and Analysis team on a part time, fixed term basis.
What you'll be doing?
We’re looking for someone who can spot investigative stories that expose poor practice when shopping and using online marketplaces, such as Amazon, eBay and Tripadvisor. This might include fake reviews, unsafe products and online scams. You will work with others across the business to hold companies and major players to account.
As this is a fixed-term contract, you’ll be expected to hit the ground running, and have the top-notch research and writing skills to turn your ideas into in-depth investigations as well as news stories and advice.
The methods you use could include anything from posing as a business to try to buy fake reviews, to reporting unsafe products to online marketplaces to see how they handle issues. We need someone with lots of ideas on developing the right method to expose the truth.
Your investigations will be published in Which? magazine, on our website and across other channels.
The responsibilities of online marketplaces are a priority area for Which?, bringing together our work into a single cross-organisational vision and action.
You will be working with colleagues across Which? including our advocacy, press and external affairs teams, to hold companies to account.
You'll also work closely with external partners including Ofcom and the CMA, as well as the online marketplaces.
The quality of your investigative research and analysis will play a vital role in upholding our well-deserved reputation for fairness, thoroughness and reliability. This is primarily a desk-based role, but you will be required to use your networking skills to build external relationships with key contacts.
What you will ideally have?
You need to have a track record in investigative research and great writing skills including long-form investigations, with understanding of writing for a consumer audience. Ideally you would have experience of writing about online marketplaces and retail, but more important than that is a strong interest in the topic.
This is a fixed term position, but with ambitions to deliver a lot over the period of the role, so you need to be able to confidently get to grips with new challenges and ways of working quickly, and be full of ideas from the start.
We'd like you to have:
- Strong investigative research skills, including longer research, and good attention to detail.
- Proven writing skills with the ability to write features as well as news and advice, and for a consumer audience.
- Experience of managing multiple short and long term projects effectively.
- Understanding of the issues around online marketplaces and retail, with ideas on how to translate this into investigative work for Which?
- Great communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and build strong relationships with colleagues across the organisation quickly.
