Newsweek is looking for a Head of Social Media to both amplify existing content and to create new types of stories on emerging and existing platforms. 

We’re looking for someone with excellent knowledge of where social media (and social content) is now and where it’s going next. You’ll be full of creative storytelling ideas and the ability to lead on strategy, brand identity, engagement and bespoke content across all social platforms.

Newsweek is one of the biggest publishers on social media in the world, with people working in New York, London, Delhi and elsewhere as part of a quickly growing global team. 

This is a full-time position and can be based in our offices in central London or remotely in the UK. All staff are temporarily working from home due to the COVID-19 situation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee Newsweek’s social media accounts and off-site identity including Instagram, Linkedin, TikTok, Facebook, Twitter and more
  • Innovate in the types of content appearing on existing pages/feeds and in experimenting with new platforms
  • Build the visual and editorial identity of social video, Stories and interactive content
  • Develop a relationship with Newsweek’s audience on social platforms and engage more people more often
  • Analyze and understand how to build loyal and engaged audiences on social platforms and how to retain them
  • Help turn social engagement into habit-forming behavior and user subscriptions
  • Understand social native content and how that fits into the wider Newsweek brand
  • Seed content in both conventional and unconventional ways to hit the most relevant audiences
  • Identify trending topics and social-friendly news stories 
  • Monitor analytics, publishing tools and optimization data, identifying weak points and capitalizing on successes
  • Lead a team exemplifying social media best practice and educate colleagues to do the same

Requirements

  • Demonstrable knowledge of social media, community management and of growing audiences, both in volume and loyalty
  • Understanding of the U.S. news cycle and what engages American and international audiences 
  • A track record of innovation and trying new things in new ways across the web 
  • Experience at a news publisher is advantageous but not absolutely necessary
  • Good news sense
  • Knowledge of media law
  • Willingness to work in a dynamic, fast-paced 24/7 news environment
  • Excellent spelling and grammar
