Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a Deputy Editor to join our New Audiences & Community team in New York.

This is a multi-faceted job involving strong news judgment, digital community building, conversation moderation, story editing, project management, audience engagement, data analysis, strategic thinking, multimedia and product decision-making. You will play an important role in bringing our audience together around our journalism and incorporating those contributions into our coverage.

You will report to the New Audience Chief and work closely with her to use industry trends, technology developments and data/analytics to help create our digital community strategy. Together, you will work on initiatives that grow and engage different audiences, including women, young professionals, young investors and diverse communities.

You will oversee the head of the Audience Voices team, which moderates conversations on WSJ stories and engages regularly with audiences. The work will also involve collaboration with the Journal's product, design and engineering teams to create the best possible experience for conversation on WSJ.com and WSJ's mobile apps. These conversations are mainly based in our comments section, but we are experimenting with virtual communities on other platforms.

The deputy editor will also oversee the WSJ Noted. Adviser Network on LinkedIn, the Noted Contributor Network and the Women In community. The work involves setting and executing on the engagement strategies for these targeted communities, in close collaboration with important partners across the organization. With the Noted Contributor Network of young professionals, you will also organize call-outs for submissions, edit their pieces and get them ready for publication.

Central to the role is leadership and organization around consistent moderation and around raising the level of discourse among our audience. You will use solid news judgment and knowledge of audience data to make decisions, while leveraging the depth and breadth of our journalism to engage audiences. Goals of this position will be tied to supporting the Journal's growth and active day goals for audiences.

You Will:
  • Help connect the content with the audience, the audience with each other and the audience with our journalists.
  • Support the New Audience Chief in running the team and stand in her for when needed.
  • Embrace data insights, new technologies and social-media platforms to bring in new voices and reach new audiences.
  • Conduct monthly data audits and develop reports to be shared with newsroom leadership.
  • Lead with empathy, both for our audience and your team members. You will be eager to understand the perspectives of our diverse audience, and you will help your direct reports produce their very best work and support their career development.
  • Uphold The Wall Street Journal's high standards and ethics.

You Have:
  • At least five years of experience in a newsroom, ideally in editing, audience engagement, social media or user experience.
  • Exceptional news judgment, as well as a command of editing and conversational writing to engage audiences.
  • An understanding of the different opportunities for audience conversation around breaking/enterprise news and experience with high-volume commenting platforms and smart filtering models.
  • A comfort level with technical concepts and an eagerness to be helpful in technical planning around product features related to audience conversation.
  • The ability to excel in an atmosphere of constant change and a willingness to embrace experimentation.
  • The ability to balance multiple tasks and responsibilities while meeting deadlines.
