Radio Times, Freelance TV Writer
As a freelance on our Choices section, your role will be to write short TV previews. You will produce sharp, entertaining copy that tells the reader what to expect from a programme and whether it’s worth their time.
You will need to be broad in your tastes and interests, able to critique a documentary, a game show or a crime drama equally well. You should have an in-depth knowledge of past television (mainly broadcast, not streaming), but also an enthusiasm and a basic love of TV that will shine through in your writing. You will have strong opinions and you will trust your judgement when writing about a show that nobody else has seen.
You will generally get to see the programmes you write about but not always. Sometimes, you will need to produce lively copy from press notes or billings. You may need to take the initiative and do your own research or speak to programme makers. You will be able to turn copy around fast but make it concise, accurate and most importantly, a good read.
The role may range from half a day’s work to two-and-a-half days work per week.
