Mail+ is an ambitious digital project, with a subscription-based website and app, focused on news, opinion, lifestyle and multimedia, run by a talented and dedicated editorial team and a start-up mind-set.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced comment editor looking to join a growing team. Your focus will be on generating brilliant original comment and analysis on hot talking points, covering everything from culture wars and current affairs, to fashion, food and celebrity.

Key areas of responsibility

  • Generate a constant flow of unmissable daily comment and analysis for Mail+, putting us right at the heart of the national conversation
  • Work closely with the Editor and Deputy editor on revamping our Comment section on all platforms
  • Commission and edit 3-5 original articles daily across a wide and varied range of topics, from mental health issues and immigration, to Bridgerton, Botox and Boris Johnson’s curtains  
  • Working with the Head of Digital and social media editor to ensure our comment reaches the right audience in the highest numbers
  • Be intuitively keyed into the subjects that our readers most want to read about and use digital publishing skills to inform these choices
  • Growing engagement and ultimately new subscribers by identifying the subjects
  • and angles that will appeal to a wider audience than that of the current Mail portfolio
  • Liaise with newspaper desks to make the most of the comment resource we have in-house
  • Develop and nurture the comment writing skills of our editorial team so they can contribute articles


Required experience

  • The right Comment editor will have a brilliant contacts book, have oodles of charm and persuasion, and be able to call on the brightest and most outspoken opinion-makers with something unmissable to say every day
  • 5 years of experience editing comment for an established newspaper, magazine or digital product
  • Excellent grasp of and passion for current affairs, celebrity, and trending lifestyle issues
  • Digital publishing experience, including an understanding of headline optimisation and how to use data to inform editorial decisions
  • Be a dynamic and inspiring leader, juggling a dazzling freelance team with talented in-house writers
  • Develop strong relationships with our top commentators to help us maximise our reach; explore potential for their involvement in Mail+ events
  • Good understanding of what comment works on social media; assist in maximising our presence on these channels
  • Brilliant commissioning and editing skills
  • Ability to work with other teams effectively under pressure
  • Flexibility in working hours and days
