HELLO! magazine is looking for a deputy chief subeditor. You'll be a talented sub with at least five years' experience in a senior role, ideally on another publication in the celebrity/royalty/lifestyle sector.

The position involves assisting the chief sub and deputising where necessary, helping to manage the small team and the production process. It calls for excellent subbing skills using InDesign and Word, as well as an ability to pick up new software packages swiftly.

Excellent knowledge of and interest in popular culture, royalty, lifestyle, fashion and beauty content is required. This is a full-time role, with an expectation to work outside normal office hours where necessary.

Initially home-based but with some office work in due course in Central London.

Job description

The deputy chief subeditor reports directly to the chief subeditor and in his absence to the production editor. The main purpose of this role is to assist in the day-to-day running of the subbing team and to provide cover for the chief sub when necessary. 

Duties: First subbing of important features, second-reading and revising work of the subbing team under the instruction of the chief sub. This requires subediting skills of the highest standard; a talent for writing headlines, sells and captions; an understanding of HELLO! house style; and a thorough grasp of the legal issues likely to be encountered.

Deputising for the chief sub when he is absent from the office or subbing bench. This involves managing the team of subs; organising cover for holidays or sickness; organising copy flow in consultation with the editors, features team and art and pictures departments and ensuring deadlines are met; understanding and being able to use the flatplanning systems; second-reading and revising copy; liaising with outside bodies, especially the repro house and external production manager; liaising where necessary with contributors; liaising with HELLO! advertising and marketing departments; maintaining consistency in house style throughout the organisation.

Hours of Work: Monday-Friday, hours 10am to 6pm with a one-hour lunch break. There will be the need to work additional hours from time to time and, in particular, on press nights. There may also be occasional weekend and/or bank holiday work as the news schedule demands. 

Location: HELLO!'S London office in Wellington House, 69-71 Upper Ground, London, SE1 9PQ, with some work from home.

HELLO! supports hybrid working our Commercial and Print Magazine teams are office based on Tuesday and Wednesday and our Digital team on Wednesday and Thursday.
