Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is looking for an experienced and creative leader in digital news graphics and/or news design to join an award-winning team of visual journalists to drive innovative storytelling with graphics, interactives and multimedia.

You will report to the Director of Graphics and help manage and edit digital news projects of different sizes from start to finish across coverage areas and digital platforms. You will schedule and run design/brainstorming sessions with project collaborators, including reporters, editors and other visual journalists in order to help prioritize the focus of major news topics, themes, and trends that provide exciting graphics and data visualization opportunities. You will stay abreast of all of the factors that go into creating digital journalism in order to make informed strategic decisions around how we can distribute and promote our visual journalism. You will support the department as needed on broader leadership work, such as creating and implementing new workflows and processes.

While you may start this job remotely, you will eventually be based in our New York City office.

You Will:
  • Work closely with the Graphics and Technical Directors and other senior visual editors to prioritize complex stories that require project management support.
  • Guide projects from start to finish using and refining existing punch lists and processes, including setting up stakeholder meetings at various checkpoints, guiding production, testing, and preparing plans for promotion both on and off-platform.
  • In alignment with the department's priorities, schedule and lead creative design/brainstorming sessions to focus and help prioritize story ideas around broad themes and topics of interest. Follow ideas through to completion once they are greenlighted.
  • Schedule and document post-publication critiques of projects to understand what we learned, what we could do differently next time. Create avenues to share learnings broadly with the team.
  • Provide assistance with copy editing and art direction as needed.
  • Keep a tab of projects with a long tail that might need updating or debugging or fresh promotion based on the news and audience needs.
  • Create and shape new workflows and processes in a fast-paced, global, and cross-platform newsroom.
  • Stay abreast, and ahead of, visual trends and techniques that can be applied to the evolving nature of digital storytelling.
  • You Have:
  • Ideally at least 4-6 years of experience in a news organization with excellent news judgement.
  • Strong visual skills, including demonstrable design knowledge, such as layout, typography, color, interaction design, and fluency with Adobe tools.
  • Deep understanding of the array of information graphics formats, such as data visualization types, cartography and 3D.
  • Good knowledge of front-end development to guide digital projects.
  • Good knowledge of the production work that goes into designing for multiple screen sizes and the technical nuances of the digital landscape, for example, requirements of AMP or Apple News.
  • Strong communication skills and experience managing projects with multiple stakeholders.
  • Comfortable working on deadline and available when unexpected news breaks.
  • Must be very organized and able to schedule and run effective meetings in person or remotely.
  • Demonstrable experience in leading a team successfully.
  • Experience leading structured design/brainstorming sessions that result in visual stories that align with editorial and strategic goals.
  • A creative vision and willing to share and collaborate on new ideas.
  • Able to work quickly and efficiently under tight deadlines.
  • Able to train reporters and editors to learn new skills that will contribute to their visual storytelling.
