Editor for P&H Engineering magazine

The magazine for the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE)

James Pembroke Media (JPM) are looking for an experienced freelance editor to work with us on behalf of the CIPHE to publish P&HE magazine.

The magazine is published quarterly (4 x pa) with an average pagination of 52 pages per issue consisting of approximately 40 editorial pages. See latest issue: https://www.ciphe.org.uk/professional-members/publications

Key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Seeking out new, experienced voices to create content for the magazine, as approved by CIPHE
  • Creation of four issues of the magazine a year, in collaboration with the CIPHE and JPM
  • Attending editorial meetings (expected to be 4 pa) with the Publisher and CIPHE (either in-person or via Zoom/Microsoft Teams etc) plus follow-up conversations as needed
  • Briefs and commissions will be agreed at these meetings for each issue
  • After each editorial meeting the Editor will compile and circulate the editorial contents including 
a page-by-page breakdown and flatplan for the forthcoming issue
  • Writing or commissioning copy for all features and news section
  • Ensuring the schedule is adhered to by all contributors
  • Reading all supplied and commissioned copy and doing a rough cut for sense, style and length
  • Instructing the Publisher’s project manager/sub-editor and designer on matters which relate to editorial content, design and scheduling
  • Liaising with the Publisher’s project manager/sub-editor, designer and other JPM editorial staff as needed
  • Doing a first and final proof of all pages before they are sent to CIPHE for approval
  • Working with the sales team to identify commercial opportunities for the magazine
  • Monitoring the editor’s email address for the magazine, replying where needed
  • The Editor is expected to work from home
  • The Editor may also be required to attend occasional functions or events for CIPHE, the expenses of which will be met in full by the Publisher

Fee per issue: £2,000 per issue + contribs budget

The Editor accepts that this not a full-time role and that he/she is responsible for his/her own tax payments and NIC and is not entitled to holiday or sickness benefits because this is purely a freelance role and he/she is not an employee or regular worker for the Publisher.
