Job Details

i is launching an exciting new apprenticeship scheme to train and nurture future journalism talent. The flagship two-year programme offers structured on-the-job training, a nationally recognised journalism qualification and mentoring from i’s experienced journalists.

Each apprentice will receive a salary for two years and fully-funded tuition. i has created this apprenticeship to open new routes into journalism for candidates who may traditionally face barriers to a career in media.

About us

At 10 years old, i is Britain's youngest national newspaper and website. In 2020 we were named Britain’s most trusted national news brand (by industry auditor PAMCo), Daily Newspaper of the Year (London Press Club) and News Website of the Year (Online Media Awards). We publish reporting, opinion and in-depth features for an intelligent audience, and we are proud that our non-partisan journalism offers an antidote to political spin and media bias. Our newsroom is a creative, collegiate and ambitious environment with a strong track record of investing in future talent.

Key details of the apprenticeship programme:

  • This new scheme will train apprentices in journalism and includes practical experience in our growing newsroom.
  • The two-year training contract offers expert tuition in digital and print journalism, including media law, ethics, public affairs, court reporting and shorthand.
  • Trainees will work towards achieving their Junior Journalism Apprenticeship, made up of the NCTJ Diploma in Journalism and a final assessment project.  Each apprentice will complete four weeks of intensive training with our partner PA Media, followed by a 13-week programme of Monday-to-Thursday training with PA, alongside Fridays in i’s newsroom.
  • Throughout the rest of the apprenticeship, which will be spent in i’s newsroom, apprentices will continue to be mentored by i journalists and receive guidance and feedback from PA trainers.
  • Apprentices will then work towards a special project – a unique piece of journalism that showcases your talents.
  • You will take exams and complete assessments so that by the end of your 18-month apprenticeship you should achieve the NCTJ Diploma in Journalism as well as L3 Junior Journalist Apprenticeship. Trainees will then continue to work in i’s newsroom for a further six months. The trainee scheme starts in August 2021.
