News Reporter, MoneySavingExpert.com

Why Join the News and Investigations Team?

MoneySavingExpert.com’s News and Investigations team covers breaking news and conducts in-depth investigations across a wide range of personal finance and consumer topics – and in recent months has led the site’s agenda-setting coronavirus coverage. It also runs the MoneySavingExpert.com homepage.

Why Our Role?

MoneySavingExpert.com are looking for two News Reporters to join the News and Investigations team – one is a permanent role, the other is a maternity cover (12 months fixed term contract).

The News Reporter has a key role in the MoneySavingExpert editorial team. We’re looking for a talented and hungry journalist to help drive the site’s news content and put together national-headline-grabbing investigations – someone who understands MoneySavingExpert’s style of practical, campaigning journalism, consistently delivers top-notch exclusives and can hit the ground running.

You’ll work on breaking news we turn around in three minutes and in-depth investigations we dig into for three months, across everything from banking to travel, and savings to shopping. Previous experience of personal finance or consumer topics is an advantage, not essential – but you will need an excellent news sense, plus some experience as a news reporter.

As well as being a top-notch journalist who can explain complicated subjects in an easy-to-read manner, you’ll have an analytical mind and meticulous attention to detail to ensure every word you publish is absolutely spot-on, so our millions of users always get accurate and timely information. You must be comfortable number-crunching, asking forensic questions and sweating the small print, then explaining the inner workings of an ISA in a few chatty, engaging paragraphs. Puns are a plus.

We are keen to increase the impact of our investigative journalism, so would particularly welcome applications from candidates with skills and experience in this area.

What will you be doing?

Key responsibilities:

  • Writing news stories and blogs
  • Pitching, researching and writing investigations
  • Contributing content to the weekly email
  • Writing and where necessary updating guides on newsy topics, eg, coronavirus and Brexit
  • Championing news within MoneySavingExpert and helping us break big stories which are picked up elsewhere

What do you need to excel in this role?

Essential:

  • Some experience as a news reporter
  • A flair for writing and the ability to bring to life often-complex subjects
  • An appetite to break big news stories
  • Good understanding of online journalism, with some experience using analytics and social media
  • Be a stickler for accuracy
  • The ability to work to tight deadlines
  • Strong time management/prioritisation skills

Nice to have:

  • Knowledge of personal finance and consumer issues
  • Journalism qualification
  • Shorthand
  • Familiarity with MoneySavingExpert
  • Experience in investigative journalism, eg using the FOI Act
  • Data journalism skills
  • A track record in campaigning journalism
  • We're an inclusive, anti-racist and equal opportunity employer that values diversity. This means we respect and embrace differences in gender identity, race, ethnic origin, sexual expression and orientation, religion and faith, age, marital status, disability, neurodiversity, social background, education and way of thinking. We’re a place where you can be you.

We understand that job adverts only say so much and you’re likely to have a lot of questions. If you’d like to know anything before applying such as more on the location, salary, our parental leave policy etc, please just let us know and we’ll be happy to help.  You can contact the Talent Acquisition Partner for this role, Meshall at meshall.sen@moneysupermarket.com

We welcome all applications and particularly those from black and minority ethnic candidates as we’re looking to build representation across our Editorial teams.

Please be aware that, if you’re successful in securing this position, the offer will be subject to several colleague checks that may include: identity, right to work in the UK, credit, criminal record, references and, where relevant, professional qualifications.
