Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is looking for an experienced candidate with a background in information architecture and taxonomy to reshape the way we categorize our content. The Senior Information Architect is a strategically important role as we work to improve how digital users navigate our articles and other media.

You will be the expert who will assess and reinvent our complex taxonomy. You will redesign it based on our editorial coverage and internal product/technology needs. The goal is to create a sustainable, flexible system that will benefit the newsroom now and in the future. You will also create the process for maintaining its consistency and accuracy. As such, we're looking for someone with experience redesigning a sizable taxonomy, who can show the improvements it resulted in and how the system is designed for flexibility and sustainability.

You will be the face of this transformation for our newsroom and other stakeholders across WSJ. Comfort communicating at this level and the ability to build strong relationships across functions in a large organization, plus a proven ability to get buy-in for new processes will be important skills. An entrepreneurial mindset and attention to detail are also key.

You may start this job remotely but you will eventually be based in our New York office. You will report to the Programming Strategy Editor.

You Will:
  • Reimagine our taxonomy so that teams across WSJ can all benefit from better metadata
  • Establish a strategic vision for how this system will evolve and expand along with a tangible plan for evaluating success through assessing the accuracy and consistency of the metadata
  • Collaborate with the newsroom on new processes to ensure reporters and editors are making accurate metadata choices
  • Work closely with our product teams across WSJ on the rollout of taxonomy changes
  • Work with product managers on metadata features in our CMS and other tools to encourage accuracy and adaptation of metadata and tagging
  • Make important decisions around when a new topic should be added
  • Communicate guidelines and provide feedback on taxonomic choices
  • This job will not require you to build a structured data warehouse. You will be working closely with data scientists.

You Have:
  • At least 3 years of experience in a taxonomist or information architect role OR be able to speak to a large scale taxonomy project from beginning to end that you played a lead role in
  • At least 1 year of management experience
  • Knowledge of the importance of a good taxonomy in a media company and its impact on products from automated data reports to personalization to how users discover our content and everything in between
  • The ability to navigate a large organization effectively and build strong cross-functional working relationships
  • A track record of getting buy-in for new processes from numerous stakeholders
  • Experience with software relevant to creating taxonomy maps
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience working in a fast-paced organization, ideally in news or media
  • Experience doing research, audits, user interviews and a passion for learning and discovery

Ideal Candidates Will Have:
  • A bachelor's or master's degree in library science or information architecture is preferred
  • An understanding of large databases, data warehouses and data lakes
  • Experience using web analytics tools like Google or Adobe Analytics, or visualization tools like Tableau, Looker, or Data Studio

To apply, please submit your resume and a cover letter explaining how you would approach the job.
