Job Description:The WSJ's Berlin bureau is looking for a reporter to cover European business and economics from Germany, the continent's biggest economy and market. The country is home to some of the biggest players in some of our most-core sectors, including pharmaceuticals (Bayer), engineering (Siemens) and tech (SAP). RWE is among a group of mostly European green-energy majors that are driving the developed world's energy transition. The country is also filled with giant family-owned firms that have shaken up their respective global industries. JAB has scrambled the global coffee business, while Aldi and Lidl have changed the way Americans shop for food. Germany has also become a key tech battle ground in the fight between Silicon Valley and European regulators -- with the German government and its courts leading the charge in Europe's pushing for privacy safeguards. This is a crucial business beat for the Journal. It provides a broad canvas for breaking news and writing enterprise, and it's a perch from which to collaborate closely with business reporters in Europe, Asia and the U.S. on our most important global stories. The beat also includes coverage of Europe's largest economy as it prepares to reopen amid new challenges and just months ahead of a general election that is likely to herald a change of economic policy. We are looking for someone enthusiastic about looking at the world through a business and economics lens and determined to dominate coverage of the nation's most-important business stories. As Berlin is a relatively small bureau, the position also offers the opportunity on occasion to report on cultural, social and political issues, ranging from the country's energy transition to the task of integrating the two million refugees who have settled in Germany in the past decade. We are looking for someone with at least three years of experience covering business, finance or economics and a proven record of success in generating and executing ideas and dominating a beat. A good command of the German language is a must.
