The Times and The Sunday Times are looking for a deputy food editor to deliver distinctive food content for our print and digital platforms.

Applicants must have experience working as a writer and commissioning editor at a national newspaper or magazine. You will have good contacts in the food and restaurant industries and a passion for food journalism along with strong copy-editing skills and the ability to write with flair, to tight deadlines.

The successful candidate will have a good understanding of SEO techniques and the ability to use social media platforms to engage current and new audiences for The Times and The Sunday Times.

Responsibilities

  • Commission distinctive food content that can feature across the different sections of The Times and The Sunday Times on all platforms

  • Contribute digital content for food and recipes across the seven-day digital platforms, delivering content that engages subscribers and attracts new subscribers through search

  • Be reader-focused when commissioning content

  • Generate and write exclusive stories for the news desks of both papers that could appear in other sections of the newspapers, such as home news and weekday feature pages

  • Work with the TNL audience team to promote food content through social media and search

  • Manage photography shoots

  • Work with production colleagues in design, graphics, pictures and sub-editing to produce food content and supplements as efficiently as possible, meeting deadlines

Skills and experience

  • Experience working as a writer and a commissioning editor on a national newspaper or magazine

  • Strong copy editor, able to write compelling copy with flair under time pressure

  • Past experience in and a demonstrable passion for food journalism with good contacts in the food and restaurant industries

  • Good understanding of SEO techniques to maximise search results

  • Able to use social media platforms to engage current and new audiences for The Times and The Sunday Times

  • Highly organised and strong planning skills

  • Persuasive presentation skills, well-developed interpersonal skills, with the ability to problem-solve and negotiate positive outcomes

  • Able to communicate succinctly and effectively

  • Experience working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams

  • A strong understanding of editorial compliance and regulatory issues
