The Bureau of Investigative Journalism, Reporter (FTC)

The Bureau of Investigative Journalism is expanding and we are looking for a talented journalist to join our Enablers reporting team.

We are hiring reporters to join our Enablers project, investigating how UK executives, lawyers and advisers are enabling oligarchs, dictators and criminals around the world.

We want an enthusiastic journalist with at least three years experience of strong investigative or financial reporting to join this team on a 12-month contract.

About the Bureau

The Bureau is the UK’s largest independent investigative journalism organisation. It exists to inform the public about the realities of power in today’s world. Our investigations seek to expose systemic wrongs, challenge misinformation and spark change. With no corporate or political agenda, we bring to light serious issues affecting individuals and communities in the UK and around the world.

We work collaboratively to maximise the impact of our fact-based reporting and share our findings openly with local, national and international media outlets to reach as many people as possible.

About the Enablers project

We have been reporting on how London’s elite professions have been serving as enablers to overseas interests for several years now, including campaigning for the release of the Russia report in 2019.

Our Enablers project, launched in the summer of 2020, investigates how top-paid business executives, lawyers and political advisors in the UK are enabling oligarchs, dictators and criminals around the world. This story has gone untold for too long.

A lot of mainstream reporting has been done on the crimes, abuses and financial misdeeds of malicious states and wealthy individuals – but very little has been brought to light about the lawyers, PR advisers, accountants, estate agents and bankers that take care of the details and help them get away with it.

The Enablers team is a three-person unit, consisting of an editor and two reporters.

The role

It is an exciting time to join our innovative, mission-driven journalism outfit and be part of an ambitious new project to produce cross-border investigations.

The reporter will work as part of our investigative team. You will have demonstrable reporting experience and will be able to show some experience of investigative or off-diary journalism.

Experience and skills

• Proven track record of original, high-quality reporting
• At least three years’ reporting experience
• Some investigative or long-form journalism experience
• A strong contact book among London’s professions, oligarchs, or both
• Understanding of media law and journalism ethics
• Diligence and attention to detail
• You will be a collaborative team player
• A passion for accountability journalism

Desirable experience and skills

• Investigative reporting
• A foreign language (particularly Russian)
• Financial reporting experience
• Data journalism skills
• Good story ideas

This is envisaged as a full-time role, primarily based in our London office (once it is safe to return to the office), but as the Bureau is committed to supporting people who require a more flexible approach to working this is open to discussion.

Salary: £34-38,000, dependent on experience.
Duration: One year fixed-term contract
