Description

The deputy editor will help lead and steer coverage for the largest of Risk’s four desks – in terms of both traffic and headcount. The desk has two reporters in Hong Kong, two in New York, and three in London, where the deputy editor and editor are also based. Responsibilities are varied, ranging from managing journalists and editing copy, to assigning stories, and contributing your own reporting.

Traditionally an OTC derivatives publication, Risk’s coverage has evolved along with those markets – encompassing flow trading, as well as structured and exotic products. For flow, stories may focus on market structure, electronic and automated trading, as well as the cash and listed products that are traded alongside standardised OTC derivatives. In the structured and exotic space, coverage tends to focus more heavily on products, pricing, valuation and risk management.

In all cases, Risk’s coverage stands out by virtue of its depth. We try to be first to the market’s more technical stories – but even when we are not, we will always offer more insight and analysis than other titles.

Our readers represent the full cross-section of the market, and our reporting reflects that – we speak to the buy-side, the sell-side, the technology and infrastructure firms that connect them, and the regulators and supervisors that oversee them. This is a great strength, enabling us to piece together complex stories that have multiple stakeholders. It also means we have to be sensitive to a story’s nuances: there may not always be a clear winner, or a clear loser.

As derivatives trading has become more transparent, our Markets stories increasingly make use of public datasets – and we expect this kind of reporting to become increasingly important.

The role requires several years of financial reporting experience, preferably within capital markets. Some editing and management experience would also be preferred.

Key responsibilities:

  • Alongside the editor, ensure the Markets desk produces stories our audience cares about; stories that can’t be found elsewhere.
  • Establishing immediate – and longer-term – coverage priorities, on the basis of conversations with sources and analysis of site traffic.
  • Supervising and supporting journalists throughout their reporting (in some cases, this may mean joining them in calls and meetings, not just advising them on questions and angles).
  • Editing some stories when filed (Risk has a separate editing pool, so desk-based editors are often only required to ‘taste’ the copy and submit to the pool, rather than edit from top-to-toe).
  • Contributing to the coverage regularly via news stories, profiles and feature articles.
  • Look for stories that use – and bring to life – the large datasets now available in derivatives and other markets.
  • Share information with other desk editors in weekly and monthly meetings, and with the wider team.

Requirements

  • All applicants must have a valid right to live and work in the UK without sponsorship.
  • Proven experience as a journalist or editor, preferably covering the financial sector and/or markets for most of that time.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills and a knack for explaining complex topics in plain English. An ability to write with flair and, when appropriate, a sense of humour would be a bonus!
  • A keen eye for detail and nuances of meaning.
  • A willingness to learn about a broad range of financial topics, including cash and derivatives pricing, structuring, execution and market infrastructure.
  • Risk.net has a collegiate approach – journalists and editors collaborate across our five editorial desks and three offices. Standards are high, but so is management support.
