The Wall Street Journal's Opinion section seeks a dynamic and experienced SEO editor to offer content guidance and make headline and packaging decisions on the Journal's platforms. The SEO editor will play an essential part in shaping our content strategy and must be able to employ superb news judgment and understanding of audience and SEO data, helping to identify trending topics and find innovative ways to optimize the Opinion section's award-winning journalism. Additionally, having a strong command of newsroom workflows and proficiency with digital publishing tools are key to ensuring the success of this role.

While you may start this job remotely, you will eventually be based in our New York office.

Responsibilities include:
  • Playing an active role in curating and developing SEO best practices for the Opinion section.
  • Helping lead the training of the Opinion section for SEO best practice, headline writing and other SEO-related issues
  • Work with our Technical and Newsroom SEO teams, including an SEO Analyst, to distill performance data into strategic information.
  • Using keyword research to work directly with editors and reporters on article and content optimization, as well as contribute to forward planning.
  • Populating and building an SEO Calendar with topics, content ideas, and other strategic notes.
  • Monitoring the performance of articles using real-time analytics tools and make strategic SEO decisions based on that data and real-time Google Rankings.
  • Writing, updating and editing content based on SEO opportunities.

Strong candidates will have the following skills and experience:
  • At least 2-4 years of experience in growing SEO organically within a newsroom environment.
  • Ability to perform keyword and trend research to identify what keywords to target and make this accessible for editorial teams.
  • Expert ability to optimize content using SEO tools such as Google Trends and other SERP tools including top stories and organic search.
  • Excellence in optimizing and editing copy for search, as well as digital headline writing.
  • Proven experience in developing and contributing to search-oriented content strategy.
  • Familiarity with the Editorial Page's brand, content offering, and various digital/print platforms.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience with Google and other search engines, as well as SEO best practices including site hygiene, URL practices, publishing processes, web crawling, AMP pages, and mobile web optimization.
  • Good working knowledge of Adobe Analytics/Omniture (or similar Business Intelligence tool) and Google Search Console.
  • Intuitive knowledge around WSJ's core coverage areas.
  • Strong writing and editing capabilities with SEO in mind.
  • Candidates should be familiar with the ideas, philosophy and principles for which the Wall Street Journal editorial page stands
