Times Higher Education is seeking three experienced reporters to join a team producing news and features for an award-winning publication with an expanding national and international audience. Higher education is a hugely rewarding area to cover, and as one of the fastest growing industries globally, THE has ambitious plans to continue to extend its reach and influence.

These new roles cover three exciting areas:

  • Asia (based London, Singapore, Australia or US)
  • Europe (based London)
  • Rankings and leadership (based London)

About us
Times Higher Education was founded in 1971 and, from its roots as a UK policy magazine, has developed into the world’s leading source of higher education news, analysis and data. Headquartered in London, it continues to publish a fortnightly print magazine and has a rapidly growing online audience, reaching an audience of around 30 million academics, higher education professionals and students every year. Key to this growth has been the development of our uniquely influential suite of university rankings, including the flagship THE World University Rankings. THE now has operations and offices around the world, delivering the THE World Summit Series of leadership events in every continent, and with a portfolio of data, branding and consultancy products. THE is expanding its editorial operation to serve this rapidly growing global audience, including through the THE Campus resource-sharing community and the THE Student platform.

The roles
For our roles focused on Asia and Europe, we are seeking talented journalists who can demonstrate a clear track record of agenda-setting journalism in these key regions, or the aptitude to build expertise and contacts across international borders at pace. The successful candidates will lead our coverage of these important sectors, helping to shape our global news agenda and playing a central role in representing THE among higher education staff, sector leaders, and policymakers. Their output will include live coverage of breaking news, comprehensive reporting on the regional policy agenda, interviews with movers and shakers, and exclusive stories which capture readers’ attention at home and abroad. They will also write long-form features offering definitive takes on the key talking points in higher education today.
For our role focused on rankings and leadership, we are seeking a talented journalist to deliver analysis, interviews and features supporting THE’s prestigious and highly influential suite of rankings, which attract many millions of readers and make global headlines. The successful candidate will lead coverage of a new leadership content stream centred on regular in-depth interviews with senior figures at some of the world’s top universities and develop innovative ideas for new leadership-related content. Their output will also include data-driven news and analysis, practical ‘how to’ articles and engaging social media content.

Who you are
We are seeking senior reporters with at least two years’ experience on a respected news outlet, who can demonstrate a strong track record in finding and breaking news stories, writing in-depth features and building strong contacts around a specified brief.
First and foremost we are seeking talented, enthusiastic and creative journalists with a nose for a story, strong writing skills, and the drive and commitment to contribute to a hard-working team. You’ll be comfortable interviewing everyone from students and researchers to vice-chancellors and political leaders, and will be adept at representing THE among university staff and the wider higher education community. Prior experience covering education or research, and fluency in a language other than English, would be an advantage but is not essential. Familiarity with data journalism would also be an advantage.

To apply, please submit a CV and covering letter, including your salary expectations. Candidates should indicate whether they wish to apply for a specific role or if they would like their application to be considered across all our vacancies.
