Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is looking for an experienced and enterprising reporter to cover the intersection of business and politics in Europe. The European Union has become a global force in setting rules of the game for business -- from Big Tech and social media to the environment and trade -- with an influence stretching far beyond the boundaries of the 27-nation bloc.

Fundamental to this beat is breaking news in areas of EU oversight that WSJ readers care deeply about, particularly competition and antitrust regulation of tech giants. Other areas of focus include trade, taxation and environmental regulation. You will need to be or become deeply sourced within relevant arms of the European Commission, among top national regulators and with lobbyists. Constant dialog with sources will be vital.

Within the Journal, you will collaborate regularly with tech and M&A reporters and counterparts covering regulation in the U.S. and Asia.

Breaking EU regulatory news is this beat's bedrock but only a part of the territory. You will need to find creative ways to tell stories of how EU muscle affects businesses and individuals across the continent and around the world.

Many of the best stories about the EU's power and shortcomings are told far from Brussels. EU decisions have billion-dollar impacts on some of the world's largest economies and companies, from Apple and Amazon to Alibaba and Huawei, Google to Gazprom. Governments worldwide are emulating its regulations.

We are looking for someone who has a track record of generating scoops, writing high-impact enterprise and developing deep sourcing networks. You should also know how to draw big conclusions from disparate details, making clear to readers how distant events echo and decisions drive international events. The job entails both independent reporting and extensive teamwork. Fluency in a major European language is a plus.

This position is based in Brussels and reports to Brussels Bureau Chief Dan Michaels, feeding into World and Business coverage areas.

To apply, please submit your resume, a cover letter explaining how you would approach the job, and five samples of your work.
