Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is looking for multimedia editors/visuals producers to join our Off-Platform team in New York as we expand our focus on social and vertical storytelling.

You will work with photographers, editors, reporters, designers, developers and other visual journalists to create rich, multimedia stories, both for breaking news as well as planned features and enterprise journalism. The job requires deep experience with photography, video and visual storytelling. We're looking for people with a collaborative and innovative mindset who can quickly adapt in a fast-moving environment. Our work is seen by millions of people every day around the world, and we are committed to the growth of visual and interactive journalism on vertical platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat, Google Web Stories and more.

You will report up to the Off-Platform Editor. While you may start this job remotely, you will be based in our New York office.

You will:
  • Work on a small team, producing and building visual assets that help showcase our journalism for the millions of people who come to us from social channels, with a focus on visual-first platforms like Instagram, Snapchat and Google Web Stories.
  • Edit, pace and build powerful visual stories, incorporating strong photography, video, audio, animation and other elements. Collaborate with various newsroom teams to ensure these are executed at a high level across all channels.
  • Show sound editorial judgment and a clear understanding of WSJ's publishing standards.
  • Help codify visual best practices on social media, including the creation of custom templates; clarify and update the guidelines as necessary.
  • Attend coverage planning meetings to identify and work with editors and reporters to shape stories with the highest potential to engage audiences on visual-first social platforms. Pitch and develop visual stories.
  • Be data-informed in your decision-making to grow our reach on these channels. Work with the audience and platform teams on social strategy and distribution of WSJ content.
  • Explore opportunities for live-streaming via various platforms; conceive original content that can be serialized on those platforms
  • Contribute to efforts associated with the day-to-day publishing of visual content on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other social channels.
  • Coordinate with other social-media editors, including colleagues in Europe and Asia, to ensure smooth transitions in social publishing around the clock.

You have:
  • Sound news, storytelling and design judgment and a clear understanding of WSJ's publishing standards.
  • An enthusiasm for Wall Street Journal journalism and a curiosity about current events.
  • Prior experience working at the intersection of social media and journalism. Experience as a photo editor, video or multimedia producer preferred.
  • Fluency with photo and video editing software, including Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, After Effects and/or other relevant tools. Basic coding skills, animation skills or the ability to shoot video are a plus.
  • Familiarity with social-media publishing and analytics tools, including SocialFlow, Adobe Analytics, CrowdTangle and other relevant software or platforms.
  • Expertise with responsive design and best practices for designing stories for mobile devices.
  • Ability to take direction and work quickly and efficiently under tight deadlines.
  • The initiative to take on and learn new tasks.
  • Strong organizational, communication, leadership and collaborative abilities
