Editor, The Times and The Sunday Times Ireland

A rare and prestigious opportunity has arisen for the role of Editor, The Times and The Sunday Times Ireland. 

Reporting to the Editor of The Sunday Times and the Editor of The Times, the position is a wide-ranging job managing two titles across seven days. It requires a deep understanding of what is most important to our core audience as well as how the digital revolution has changed what readers want from the titles. 

The successful applicant would be responsible for ensuring the world-class standards of digital and print journalism our readers expect, and leading the editorial team as we move to digital first publishing.

Responsibilities

• Deliver a distinctive, agenda-setting news package across all platforms

• Lead and manage the newsroom, developing talent and supporting progression

• Work with reporters, writers and audience experts to develop exclusive story ideas across all sections

• Oversee investigations

• Forward-plan, working with journalists on long-range projects

• Manage all costs to ensure the budget is managed as efficiently as possible to agreed objectives, ensuring all products are commercially viable

• Create a diverse and inclusive product from an editorial perspective, and develop a diverse talent pool of contributors and staff  

• Work collaboratively with all internal departments including commercial, marketing, audience & insight, production and distribution, finance and HR 

• Manage an external profile as the spokesperson for The Times and The Sunday Times in Ireland with key political, business and commercial stakeholders 

• Contribute to industry bodies and working groups to sustain and grow the significance of our business 

Skills and experience

• Working as a news editor for a national newspaper or website and managing a large department

• An interest and understanding of how to attract and retain new audiences

• An ability to work under pressure, to tight deadlines and with rigorous accuracy

• An understanding of how audience data supports commissioning and how to promote a story on social media and through search engines

• Ability to communicate succinctly and effectively

• Experience of working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams 

• Strong people and change management experience 

• Persuasive presentation skills, well-developed interpersonal skills, with the ability to problem-solve

• An existing contributor to external bodies with key connections in business

• Experience of managing a department budget

• A strong understanding of editorial compliance and regulatory issues
