Data and digital graphics editor

Job summary 

The data and digital graphics editor is responsible for overseeing a team of 11 graphics journalists who produce graphics, interactives and data-led stories for the Times’s digital editions. This job involves work with senior editors on The Times and The Sunday Times, including working closely with the news desks for both papers. 

The successful candidate will be an experienced journalist who understands compelling and cutting edge ways to enliven our journalism, has data analysis, programming and strong leadership and people-management skills. The candidate will also be expected to originate compelling stories.

Responsibilities:

  • Work as a senior journalist in The Times and The Sunday Times newsrooms to commission stories for for our daily digital editions, as well as long-term investigative projects and features packages

  • Coming up with exclusive story ideas and investigations, and managing the development of these ideas with senior journalists

  • Oversee data and digital graphics projects across The Times and The Sunday Times, working with senior editors from multiple departments

  • Manage data and digital graphics staff to deliver digital graphics, interactives and data-led stories as agreed with the senior news and features editors

  • Manage people in the team to help them to develop projects and investigations to pitch, and to develop their skills

  • Lead the improvement of data literacy in the newsroom

 

Skills and experience:

  • Experienced journalist with strong news judgment and a demonstrable interest in news, current affairs, lifestyle and sport

  • Leadership experience, is able to establish strong working relationships and build credibility with senior managers, influence editorial colleagues, lead thinking and generate story ideas

  • Demonstrable people management and development experience

  • Excellent communication skills, can communicate effectively with all levels of seniority across the paper and with external industry contacts

  • Looks across the media industry to assess skills and compelling story formats

  • Proficiency in using one or more programming languages, such as R or Python, for data collection and analysis

  • Proficiency in spreadsheets and statistical methods: collecting, summarising, analysing and interpreting variable numerical data using Excel or equivalent

  • Experience using visualisation technologies for digital graphics (e.g. D3, QGIS, Leaflet, Three.js, Adobe Illustrator)

  • Highly organised, able to work under pressure, to tight deadlines and with rigorous accuracy

  • A strong understanding of editorial compliance and regulatory issues

This role will join our cross-title digital strategy team. The team is charged with finding and telling stories on our digital platforms in the most appropriate formats and empowering the newsroom to present stories in new and innovative ways.
