Job summary 

The features data and digital graphics editor is responsible for working on projects, commissioning digital graphics, interactives and data-led stories for the Times’s digital editions. This job works with senior features editors on The Times and The Sunday Times and news editors on The Sunday Times and a team of data and digital graphics journalists. 

The successful candidate will be a journalist who understands compelling and cutting edge ways that enliven our journalism, has data analysis, programming and strong people-management skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Work as part of the The Times & Sunday Times news desks to commission stories for our digital platforms

  • Oversee projects for the features and lifestyle sections of The Times & The Sunday Times, working with senior features editors

  • Manage data and digital graphics staff on a daily rota to deliver digital graphics, interactives and data-led stories as agreed with the news editor

  • Mentor people in the team to help them to develop projects and investigations to pitch, and to develop their skills

  • Help to improve data literacy in the newsroom through training and collaboration with reporters

 

Skills:

  • Experienced journalist with strong news judgment

  • Curious about cutting edge developments with digital storytelling, and is regularly assessing how graphics is evolving across the media industry

  • Proficiency in using one or more programming languages, such as R or Python, for data collection and analysis

  • Proficiency in spreadsheets and statistical methods: collecting, summarising, analysing and interpreting variable numerical data using Excel or equivalent

  • Experience using visualisation technologies for digital graphics (e.g. D3, QGIS, Leaflet, Three.js, Adobe Illustrator)

  • Highly organised

  • Able to collaborate with others and work well in groups

  • Can clearly articulate story ideas

  • Excellent communication and people-management skills 

  • Able to work under pressure and to tight deadlines

The Times and The Sunday Times represent a combined 400 years of covering news and providing comment and analysis in the UK and the world.

We are authoritative, credible, responsible, trusted and a part of the nation’s cultural heritage.

This role will join our cross-title digital strategy team. The team is charged with finding and telling stories on our digital platforms in the most appropriate formats and empowering the newsroom to present stories in new and innovative ways.
