Digital design editor

 

The Times and The Sunday Times are hiring a digital design editor.

The digital design team works alongside the digital editorial team, including journalists, developers and producers, to drive forward the experience of The Times and The Sunday Times journalism across digital devices. You will work with UX designers, developers and journalists to deliver outstanding designs across all of The Times and The Sunday Times’ digital channels, with the majority of your focus on mobile applications and the Times’s website. 

We’re looking for someone who thrives under tight timescales, and is adept at turning their hand to a variety of challenges. The ideal candidate will have a rich experience working on a variety of digital platforms, from mobile apps to websites. You should have experience of working with developers. High standards and a clean, modern design aesthetic are a must.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Engaging with senior editors to understand how best to present and amplify our journalism across digital screens 

  • Manage a UX design team

  • Able to translate and execute a design brief successfully and to deadline

  • Following current affairs and culture and understanding the Times’s perspective 

  • Manage good working relationships with editorial and developers

  • Be at the forefront of emerging technologies and understand their relevance 

Skills and experience

  • Experience working as a senior designer in the media industry and managing a team of designers

  • Experience working on a variety of digital platforms, from mobile apps to websites and working with developers

  • Experience establishing strong working relationships and building credibility with senior managers, influencing editorial colleagues, leading thinking and generating ideas

  • Varied portfolio that demonstrates adaptability across different design disciplines

  • Insight into changing consumer behaviour and the ability to identify future key design trends 

  • Proficient in industry standard design applications, including InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator

  • Excellent communication skills with all levels of seniority and with external industry contacts

  • Displays an enthusiastic, can-do, flexible attitude, especially when facing challenges

The Times and The Sunday Times represent a combined 400 years of covering news and providing comment and analysis in the UK and the world.

We are authoritative, credible, responsible, trusted and a part of the nation’s cultural heritage.

This role will join our cross-title digital strategy team. The team is charged with finding and telling stories on our digital platforms in the most appropriate formats and empowering the newsroom to present stories in new and innovative ways.
