About the role: As Sub editor for Best of British, you will support the UK’s top nostalgia monthly, within this small team your role is pivotal.

The articles featured in the magazine should be enough to pique your curiosity, inspiring you to discover other aspects of the era and enable to suggest themes to the Editor. The correct spelling and styling of film, television and song titles is essential, as is being aware of stars with unusually spelt surnames such as Matt Monro, Frankie Howerd and Wilfrid Brambell, and knowing the difference between Noël Coward, Noel Streatfeild and Noele Gordon. 

About us: Best of British is the UK’s premier nostalgia magazine covering every aspect of life from the 1930s to today. Every issue is packed with features that celebrate classic entertainment, transport, food and drink, and the great British countryside. Our readers are at the heart of what we do. As well as taking their suggestions on board, their voices are heard through our Yesterday Remembered memoir section, along with the Postbag and Question Time pages.

About you: As Sub editor for Best of British, you will have experience of working for a busy newspaper or magazine as a sub editor and have an awareness of libel law. You will have the ability to write snappy headlines, standfirsts, pull quotes and captions and a talent of learning new concepts/terminology quickly. You will also possess an essential interest in classic entertainment, heritage transport, living museums and the great British countryside.

Key Accountabilities: 

  • Responsible for fact checking, article length, style, and structure. 
  • Subbing features and stories from outside contributors including our readers.
  • Sourcing images and other illustrations, while being aware of quality and budget requirements.
  • Proofreading and correcting the completed pages in InDesign.
  • Ensuring all pages and designs comply with Best of British house style and standards.
  • Liaise with Editor and/or contributors with copy queries.
