London

Engineering matters. It underpins our daily lives, drives economic growth, plays a critical role in addressing major societal challenges and helps ensure our readiness for the future, from providing a sustainable supply of food, water and clean energy, to advancing healthcare, and keeping us safe and secure.

The Royal Academy of Engineering is a charity on a mission to harness the power of engineering to build a sustainable society and an inclusive economy that works for everyone.

In collaboration with our partners and Fellows – the nation’s best engineers and innovators – we’re growing talent and developing skills for the future, driving innovation and building global partnerships, influencing policy and engaging the public.

As part of our busy communications department, you’ll demonstrate your creativity and eye for a story every day, identifying innovative and exciting engineering topics for our quarterly magazine Ingenia. Aimed at young people aged 13 to 25 who are interested in STEM subjects, Ingenia contributes to the Academy’s strategy by communicating the breadth, variety and excitement of engineering to inspire young people to consider a career in the profession, showing how it makes a difference and helps to shape the future through informative, engaging and accessible articles.

You’ll be a great team player, working closely with colleagues across the Academy to produce content for our monthly newsletters, which promote our activities and their impact on tackling the greatest challenges of our age.

You will have a meticulous eye for detail, excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills, knowledge of good and accessible design, and know how to apply brand identity effectively. You’ll support teams across the Academy with their editorial and design needs, helping them to produce high-quality and consistent materials, ranging from policy reports for a government audience to education resources aimed at engaging school students in engineering. You’ll ensure that the Academy always speaks with one voice.

A confident communicator, you’ll be comfortable liaising with people at all levels, from designers, printers and freelance writers to our partners, awardees and Fellows, giving you access to some of the UK’s most innovative thinkers and leading engineers.

To hit the ground running, you should have comprehensive knowledge of the print production process, be skilled at using In Design and have experience of content management systems. A strong engineering or scientific background would be an advantage in this role, but your ability to turn technical writing into something that is still authoritative, informative and accessible is the key requirement.

Above all, you will be a true and proactive self-starter who can operate effectively under pressure and make things happen every day.

In return, we offer an unrivalled package of benefits including a non-contributory pension scheme, BUPA cash plan, private medical insurance, regular social activities, health and wellbeing programmes and flexible working, as well as significant investment into your personal and professional development.

We have an inclusive and flexible approach to hybrid working based on trust and respecting individual difference, with a fantastic central London office near St James’ Park. During COVID-19 all staff have been working remotely, but we are now transitioning to flexible working with an average of two days a week in the office.

We are committed to diversity and inclusion, creating cultures in which everyone can thrive and diverse perspectives which enrich our collective performance. We welcome applications from individuals regardless of your background.

Closing date: 5.00pm on 26 September 2021.

Interview date: week commencing 11 October 2021 (by video).

As well as an interview with the recruiting manager and director, shortlisted candidates will undertake two short editing and proofreading exercises and provide feedback on a branded design.
