We are independently-run and committed to making an impact on the world of journalism. You will be joining a small, friendly and ambitious team with a focus on delivering exceptional content. Our talented senior team has years of newspaper and magazine experience between them.
We are looking for a people person who is buzzing with ideas and who lives and breathes news.
You will be expected to source and write your own stories but also provide assistance to the news editor in the running of the department.
While news editing you will be expected to help sub reporters’ copy, making sure it is legally sound, IPSO-compliant, while also engaging, accurate and concise.
While reporting, you will need to be a committed team player. You will be expected to work across all fields for a variety of national newspapers and websites. You must be keen to bounce your ideas off other members of staff and come in every day knowing exactly what’s on the news agenda.
The successful applicant absolutely must be a vibrant self-starter as you will not be drip-fed things to do.
You will be expected to independently come up with ideas that are fully researched and of the highest quality. You will read newspapers daily as well as online news sites. Training and assistance will be provided and you will have the opportunity to work closely with our highly experienced editorial team.
There is huge potential to progress within the business. Travel may be required as you will have to attend press events and go searching for exclusive content. As with all journalism roles, a 9-5 cannot be guaranteed - we want someone who is hungry to clinch the story.
We are looking for a news editor who can match our ambition and who is keen to be a part of a ground-breaking news team. As we are a young business you will have direct contact with the experienced editors and owners, meaning the opportunity to progress will be significant.
It is essential that you live and breathe news and current affairs and come into the office every morning bursting to chat about what’s going on in the world. You’ll need a strong news sense and must be capable of spotting what would make a good story for the national newspapers, online sites and women’s magazines. It is also essential that you have previous news experience. You must be confident interviewing people from all walks of life, often on extremely sensitive topics and under pressure. Chatty and approachable, you will feel as comfortable talking to the local vicar as you would the Prime Minister. You must also be confident subbing other reporters’ work, be able to spot grammatical errors and potential legal issues and be comfortable in the role of leader, offering guidance to younger members of staff.
You must have an NCTJ journalism qualification or equivalent and 100wpm shorthand. A full clean driving licence is a must, although you do not need to own a vehicle.
News desk experience is preferred.
This role is perfect for someone who has been working on local newspapers and who wants to take a step towards the nationals, or someone on a national who wants a change of pace.
