Senior Investigative Researcher/Writer (FTC - 9 months to a year) – energy

Division: Content

Department: Content Research and Analysis

Location: Hybrid working (5-8 days per month in offices in Central London)

We're looking for a Senior Researcher/Writer to join our Content Research and Analysis team on a minimum nine month fixed term basis.

Which? is the UK's consumer champion. As an organisation we're not for profit - a powerful force for good, here to make life simpler, fairer and safer for everyone. We're the independent consumer voice that provides impartial advice, investigates, holds businesses to account and works with policymakers to make change happen. We fund our work mainly through member subscriptions. We're not influenced by third parties – we never take advertising and we buy all the products that we test.

The role

Do you have a nose for a story, top-notch research and writing skills and the desire to make a difference in consumers' lives?

As a Senior Researcher/Writer you'll be investigating and writing content for Which? magazine, our website and other channels.

We're looking for a great investigative researcher with impeccable writing skills (print and online) who is interested in working in one of the most popular areas of our home content - energy.

You'll work in a team of 35 including investigative researchers, journalists and market analysts making a difference to consumers' lives through the research we do, the detriment we uncover and the help we give.

Your work will also have you working with others across the organisation too, from our colleagues on our energy switching site to our Later Life Care and press teams. And as we develop our organisational focus on sustainability, you'll be working with colleagues on cross-cutting areas such as how your energy bill is also about how you use your home.

But you'll also enjoy the autonomy to pitch and develop your own content ideas with support from your editor.

The quality of your investigative research and analysis will play a vital role in upholding our well-deserved reputation for fairness, thoroughness and reliability.

This is primarily a desk-based role, but you will be required to use your networking skills to build external relationships with key contacts, and your varied approaches to investigative research may take you out-and-about to experience issues through the eyes of the consumer.

This role will suit an experienced researcher/writer with a passion for helping people negotiate the trickiest day to day decisions through great advice.

What you'll be doing day to day

You'll be organising original research-based investigations such as a survey of the best and worst energy companies (rated by their customers) or an investigation into green energy tariffs.

You'll be turning your research into compelling content - mainly for our website, but we'll need someone who can turn their hand to news, online and print content and working with teams across the organisation, such as our press team to PR the best stories.

Many of our successes start with our members. Take our recent reviews of solar panels - we conducted an in-depth online study of Which? Members about buying, using and maintaining their solar panels. And our surveys start with our comprehensive consumer panel

What you will ideally have

You will ideally have a track record in research and great online writing skills, as well as an understanding of consumer concerns. Ideally you'll have worked in producing energy or other home content, but also show a strong  enthusiasm to cover this wide and exciting brief.

You will also need you to be able to turn a hand to other areas of content, as part of working in a team that covers diverse areas.

We'd like you to have:

  • Ability to manage multiple short and long term projects
  • Solid analytical and research skills
  • Demonstrable ability to write for a consumer audience
  • Digital and print writing experience
  • Experience of working with consumer insights would be beneficial

To apply please attach your up to date CV and covering letter outlining why you feel this role would be great for you and what you can offer. Deadline: Wednesday 6th October
