Job Title: Deputy political editor

Department: The Sunday Times, home news

Location: London

Reports to: Political editor

The Sunday Times is world-renowned for its informed and insightful politics coverage. The deputy political editor works as part of our team in the Lobby generating political exclusives that lead the news agenda, as well as covering the Westminster diary. 

Responsibilities

  • Bring in exclusive stories that inform and engage our readers on all platforms
  • Build and maintain excellent contacts across all political parties
  • Have the ability to write with authority and command the respect of our readers and those within the political arena
  • Represent The Sunday Times on radio, television and other media, especially our own internal stations
  • Attend news conference and politics conference
  • Commission and contribute to digital packages that increase engagement and support subscriber growth
  • Have a strong knowledge of social media and an ability to use it to increase our readership
  • Successfully manage a productive relationship with the editor of The Sunday Times and other department heads

Skills and experience

  • Strong contacts in politics and a proven ability to bring in exclusive stories
  • Experience of leading an editorial team at a national newspaper or magazine
  • Experience in digital and a commitment to growing our digital audience
  • Able to work autonomously and to strict deadlines
  • Excellent presentation skills and able to communicate succinctly and effectively
  • Experience working collaboratively 
  • A strong understanding of editorial compliance and regulatory issues
