Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is looking for an education beat reporter to cover the nation's K-12 schools.

The Covid-19 pandemic has led to a historic social, political and economic upheaval within our nation's schools, with ramifications that transcend the classroom. The moment is forcing a collective rethinking of teaching practices and methods, and prompting a host of innovative new ideas.

Beyond the pandemic-related coverage, the subject provides an intriguing range of areas to dig into, from school funding policy to how schools are changing teaching in the classrooms to the latest concerns of parents and students. Education raises important issues of equity to uncover and address. This is a great opportunity for someone eager to be part of the best-read stories of the day.

This beat offers the opportunity to break big news as well as conceptualize and deliver deeply reported narratives. We are looking for deep-dive investigations. The job is highly collaborative: You will work with other education beat reporters, WSJ podcasts, video, audio and graphics teams as well as other bureaus.

You must have an ability to understand and write about complex policies, and handle intimate reporting about the lives of children and parents. It will require a desire to connect with -- and respond to -- our readers' interests and pressing questions.

You should have at least five years of experience covering a demanding beat. Experience with databases is a plus.

You will report to the Education Bureau Chief.

To apply, please submit your resume, a cover letter explaining how you would approach the job and five clips.
