About you

  • You will have excellent news instinct and be able to think creatively about how to tell visual stories using different pieces of software.
  • Thrive in a fast paced, busy newsroom and have the ability to work under pressure.
  • Be willing work to flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
  • Strong organisational skills and time management.
  • Good understanding of how to optimise content for various platforms.
  • Have a good understanding of media law and ethics, specifically surrounding copyright.
  • Have an understanding of data analytics and be able to work to targets.

Job purpose

As a Multimedia Producer will create engaging video and audio content for The Independent’s website, social media and podcast channels – focusing mainly on Independent TV.

Reporting to the Head of Multimedia you will react to the news agenda as well as plan and produce long-term projects across multiple platforms.

You will be expected work with multiple departments, produce presenters and correspondents for appearing on video and in audio pieces, and repurpose those pieces for multiple platforms.

You will join a team that works a shift schedule that includes evenings and weekends and overnight and will be expected to be flexible with your time to ensure production and publication of content goes ahead smoothly.

Key responsibilities

  • Produce video and audio content to tight deadlines set by the Head of Multimedia.
  • Work well with members of other teams to optimise department performance.
  • Be a creative thinker and come up with ideas and pitches for new content.
  • Ensure your work is always the highest possible standard it can be.
  • Be comfortable in clearing footage from social media.
  • Ensure any content produced satisfies legal and ethical requirements.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of The Independent’s values and always work with those in mind.

Skills and experience:

  • Minimum three years’ relevant experience.
  • Ability to generate stories using video and audio.
  • Ability to think of video formats that have high traffic potential and audience interest.
  • Produce video and audio content in the Adobe Suite – Premiere, After Effects, and Audition.
  • Understanding of SEO.
  • NCTJ/BJTC qualification.
  • Ability to switch priorities if required.
  • Confidence communicating with senior editors about ideas and pitches.
  • Trustworthy personality.
  • Ethical behaviour at all times.
