About you

  • Experienced journalist with a history of social media video production and growth across multiple platforms.
  • Ability to work alone and as part of a team to video content for various social media channels.
  • Demonstrate excellent news judgement and an in-depth knowledge of social media platforms.
  • Experience shooting video with DSLR cameras and knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud software (Premiere Pro and After Effects essential).
  • Strong organisational skills and time management.
  • Have a good understanding of media law and ethics, specifically surrounding copyright
  • Thrive in a fast paced, busy newsroom and have the ability to work under pressure.
  • Be comfortable working some anti-social hours on occasion for major events.

Job purpose

As a Senior Social Media Video Journalist you will be responsible for video content on The Independent’s social media platforms.

Reporting to the Head of Multimedia you will make sure The Independent always has the best video on it’s social media, whether that be reacting to breaking stories, uploading viral videos or packaging up original content for multiple platforms.

You will be expected to have a deep understanding of how different content works on different platforms and work with a team of producers to ensure their work is being shown in the best possible way.

This role will encompass working on both short and long form editorial briefs as well as some commercial projects.

Key responsibilities

  • Ensure The Independent’s social media always has excellent video content.
  • Work with the Head of Multimedia, video producers, social team and other departments on both daily and forward planning projects.
  • Show excellent news judgement when making decisions.
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of media law and ethics.
  • Pitch creative ideas and have the ability to follow through with them.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of The Independent’s values and always work with those in mind.

Skills and experience

  • Experience of working on an equivalent title in a similar senior role.
  • Excellent understanding of online journalism and social media platforms.
  • Extensive experience in using both Adobe Premiere and After Effects.
  • Experience in other Adobe products (Photoshop, Illustrator etc) desirable.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to switch priorities if required.
  • Ability to work effectively at speed and without supervision.
  • Trustworthy personality.
  • Ethical behaviour at all times.
