Deputy Business Editor (fixed-term 12 month contract) – Evening Standard

About us:

The Evening Standard is an iconic London brand, recognised as setting the agenda in politics and business, as well as being first with lifestyle content, major news and sports stories.

We are UK’s largest quality daily and online newspaper, with one of the fastest growing audiences in the UK. We provide brands and marketers with an unparalleled gateway to London's high-value audiences through digital, print, social and events.

ES Magazine, Homes and Property and ecommerce platform ES Best are all market leading in their fields, and add to the compelling Evening Standard portfolio.

We are proud of our history and firmly set on a future that is focused on growing audiences and revenue with a digital first entrepreneurial approach.

Role purpose:

The Evening Standard is looking for an experienced business journalist to help manage the paper’s fast-moving business desk alongside reporting.

Maternity cover for the Deputy Business Editor role involves helping the business editor and business news editor oversee the running of the desk. Key responsibilities include: helping to draw up daily news lists and covering for the business news editor when they are off; helping to put pages together and proofread them; and taking part in online review and forward planning meetings.

The role also involves reporting alongside management duties. The successful applicant is expected to write daily news and features for the paper and online.

The role is full-time (Monday to Friday), with four days a week in the office. The deputy business editor will be expected to be in the office from 7am, Monday to Thursday.

The team:

The Evening Standard business desk is a team of five reporters and editors who put together the paper’s business section each day. The desk produces three pages every weekday and more stories online, setting the agenda for the business and financial world in London and beyond. The pages are regularly read by CEOs and MPs for insight into the biggest stories of the day, as well as the workers who make London tick. We report stories first and are driven to break news.

About you:

The desk is highly collaborative and fast moving. We are looking for a team player who is comfortable meeting tight morning deadlines and is energised by setting the London agenda for the day. Our mornings are spent on the phone to major CEOs getting the first take on the biggest stories in business. A good background knowledge of business and finance is essential, as is an ability to turnout clean copy quickly.

Skills and experience:

Candidates must have depth of experience at a national or major regional newspaper or significant news website covering business and/or financial news.

Management and editing experience is preferred but senior reporters will also be considered.

Experience covering the property, retail, and luxury sector is preferable, though not essential.

Expected behaviours

  • Continuous Improvement – Works in a smart, flexible and focussed way, is open to change and suggests ideas for improvements to the way things are done.
  •  Collaboration – Builds and maintains positive and supportive working relationships with colleagues.  Helps to create an inclusive and professional work environment.
  • Building Capability – Keeps own knowledge and skill set current and evolving and looks for ways to continue learning to support the achievement of business objectives.
  • Quality Service – Delivers high quality and efficient service and takes account of the diverse customer needs and requirements when looking at ways to improve service quality.
  •  Responsive Delivery - Works to agreed business goals and objectives and deals with challenges in a constructive and responsive way.  Takes personal responsibility for quality of outputs.

To apply, please send an up to date CV along with a full covering letter with salary expectations.
