Role purpose and overview

Our flagship politics liveblog is fast-paced, informed and informative, reactive and authoritative and we are looking for someone with those qualities to anchor it every day.

With more readers than any other piece of Telegraph journalism last year, the daily liveblog forms the cornerstone of The Telegraph's exceptional online politics coverage, keeping readers abreast of every twist and turn in the corridors of power and beyond to Brussels and Washington.

In your role as Live Blog Editor, you will become an established face of The Telegraph, bringing your personality and sense of fun to this vital part of our journalism, and form a relationship with the readers, both regular and casual.

They will expect you to give them the briefings they need, morning, noon and night: to have the breaking news as it breaks: to build on that as the stories develop; to tell them what is a significant move and what isn't; to cast a wry eye over Twitter spats and to showcase all the excellent political comment, analysis and investigations that The Telegraph produces.

The successful candidate will be an established political journalist, who reads and absorbs online politics coverage every day, and who has the imagination to keep the liveblog interesting and engaging in the quieter days of parliamentary recess.

You will be based in the Telegraph’s Westminster office, reporting to the Political Editor, with early morning starts from 7am, Monday to Friday. You will not be expected to work weekends outside of exceptional events such as general elections.

Key skills

  • Journalistic experience for a national newspaper, news agency or online publisher, ideally within politics.
  • An engaging and imaginative style of writing.
  • High level of proficiency in digital storytelling.
  • Proven ability to build and engage online audiences.
  • A strong network of contacts within the political sector.
  • Excellent knowledge of media law.
  • Adept at working in a high-pressure environment and producing high quality copy to tight deadlines.
  • Understanding of social media and SEO.
  • Familiarity with CMS and self-publishing.
  • Proven ability to use a variety of sources to seek out and verify breaking stories.
