Job Details

Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is seeking a reporter who loves digging into data and can mine the incredible explosion of granular statistical output the sports world generates to produce punchy, insightful stories and highly visual content.

The canvas for this job is as broad as sports itself. It includes looking for data-driven stories on how athletes and teams perform; who wins and loses; which players break out and which fail; how players and coaches are compensated; how sports entities are funded and how they spend their money; and endless other topics.

We are looking for a reporter who is excited to find new ways of looking at sports - whether it be for the casual fan, the diehard loyalists or the sports gambler.

You should have a deep knowledge of sports databases and an intense curiosity about how athletes and teams succeed or fail. That means being able to use existing data to tell us new things - and being able to create new data. A knowledge of how to present findings in a visually arresting way is a must. Proficiency in Excel, Python and/or R is preferred.

This is an opportunity to work alongside some of the most creative sports journalists in the country and take one of our core strengths - finding stories through data - to new heights.

You will report to Bruce Orwall, Global Sports Editor. While you may start the job working remotely, you will eventually be based in our New York office.

You will:

  • Develop original enterprise stories mined from sports databases.
  • Find smart, unexpected insights that advance major breaking news events.
  • Work with colleagues to conceive and executive bigger projects around major sports themes and events.

You have:

  • At least one or two years of professional journalism experience.
  • A demonstrated ability to separate from the pack and find original approaches to even the most commoditized sports events.
  • An ability and desire to use data to unearth fresh stories on how games are played and how sports themselves are changing.
  • A commitment to collegial work on a small, fast-moving team.

To apply, please submit your resume, a cover letter explaining how you would approach the job and several clips.
