Job Description:

MarketWatch seeks a reporter to join the team covering the long, winding road to retirement

Because there's a retirement story for every age, MarketWatch seeks a reporter nimble enough to cover all the key stages on the pathway to the day you finally stop working. We look at how to balance raising kids while saving both for their college and your retirement; we cover health and aging, opening a Roth IRA for your teen, where to live, the FIRE movement, and the future of Social Security.

This reporter will approach the beat not simply as a de facto financial adviser, but with an eye and heart that explores the cultural, spiritual, philosophical, and psychological dimensions of a subject that touches everyone's life.

Retirement is everyone's story and MarketWatch's readership runs the gamut: students trying to pay off debt and start saving, young workers looking to open their first 401(k), as well as mid-career professionals juggling the financial and emotional needs of their aging parents.

This beat is an opportunity to tell distinctive stories, change the way people talk and think about life after work. The successful reporter will have a passion for storytelling, and a deep curiosity about the roles work, family, money and aging play in our lives.

Be part of an innovative bureau that forges tight connections with its audience.

Essential job requirements:

  • Ability to jump on news, spot story angles and trends that keep us ahead of the competition.
  • High metabolism for information and ability to juggle long, medium and short-term stories, often collaborating with others.
  • Willingness to experiment and participate in a range of off-platform channels, from podcasts and videos to in-person events to Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat.
  • A track record of producing rigorous, readable prose that unpacks complicated topics for a consumer audience.
  • Attention to detail, meticulous fact-checking skills and the highest ethical standards.
  • At least 3 years experience.

Other skills:

  • A passion for sussing out surprises and wonders in the intricacies of Social Security, 401(k) statements and a desire to journal the lives of American workers.
  • A background in covering business topics through a consumer lens.
