Editor - Alba (Part-Time)

The Team: The Times, founded in 1785 by editor and publisher John Walter I, was created to record the principal occurrences of the times for the service of the public. To censure or applaud either political party and to cover contending issues with respectful fair argument.

More than 200 years on, these founding principles hold true today.

In 2019 The Times and The Sunday Times won the Daily and Sunday newspaper of the year categories at the British Press Awards and in 2021 The Sunday Times was named the first Sunday Paper of the year at the Scottish Press awards for its agenda-setting news stories as well as hard-hitting commentary and analysis.

Your Role: As Editor of Alba, our weekly lifestyle section, will support the edition editor in creating engaging and creative content for the definitive Scottish guide of travel, food and drink, culture and more.

Day to day you will:

  • Take a lead role in sourcing, creating and editing creative and engaging content for Alba

  • Produce great stories and feature ideas that capture the imagination of our audience

  • Ensure our online and newspaper content is polished and in the style and tone our Times and Sunday Times audiences have come to expect

  • Stay on top of the food, travel and culture trends to ensure our content is relevant and up to date for our audience

  • Work closely with colleagues across The Times and Sunday Times

What we’re looking for from you:

  • Experience working as an editor or writer for a national newspaper or website

  • Demonstrable passion and interest in travel, food and drink and culture

  • Able to work autonomously and to strict deadlines

  • Excellent presentation skills and able to communicate succinctly and effectively

  • Experience interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with others

  • An ability to work under pressure, to tight deadlines and with rigorous accuracy

  • Able to use social media platforms to engage current and new audiences for The Times

  • A strong understanding of editorial compliance and regulatory issues
