Job Details

Senior digital designer

We are looking for a senior digital designer to join the Times design team.

Your role: Working under the digital newsroom design editor you’ll collaborate with numerous teams across the newsroom - including editors, designers, data journalists, social media journalists and developers - to create, produce and deliver digital storytelling solutions for mobile app, web and social platforms.

You’ll bring stories to life with clean, clear and engaging design, and push the boundaries to find new and exciting ways of delivering world-class journalism while ensuring all output remains true to the Times aesthetic.

The job will include creating eye-catching social media posts using your animation skills, developing thought-through responsive data visualisations and conceptualising artwork for undercover investigations. This role is varied and challenging, making it hugely rewarding.

You must be interested in current affairs and culture, and be able to work as part of a team on a fast-paced and constant news cycle that requires all designers to roll up their sleeves on the production side as well as give creative input.

Please apply with a covering letter and your CV by May 15.

Key Skills

  •  An Adobe expert (Photoshop certainly, and After Effects ideally) but also Figma, and an understanding of HTML would be beneficial.
  • A burning desire to find the best way of communicating an idea in a visual way. This could be a complicated piece of data visualisation on the French election, or a piece of artwork for a series on mental health. Editorial design should entice the reader and help them to understand the story more easily once they’re engaged.
  • The ability to collaborate with other disciplines (editors in particular) and the ability to sell your ideas confidently, always knowing when to push and when to pull.
  • The ability to deliver on time in a fast-paced environment with both short and long-term deadlines.
  • The skill to think outside the box and solve problems, not just be an artworker. Be enthusiastic about an idea and bring people along with you.
  • An awareness of digital design trends and the desire to deliver beautiful, useable and intuitive solutions. Be keen to self-evaluate your work, but be open to feedback from peers.
  • Ideally editorial/publishing/social experience
  • An understanding of the structural components of the web, eg HTML and CCS
  • Collaboration is key. A lot of stakeholders means a lot of discussions; it’s good to talk… You should know when you need to crack on to hit that deadline What we're looking for from you

What we're looking for from you

  • You love design and you’re interested in news and current affairs

  • You enjoy collaborating with a variety of stakeholders from different disciplines/sections of the paper; all wanting their say. We don’t design by committee, but you love balancing all the opinions to create the best possible outcome

  • If you want the opposite of a small design agency experience
