Data reporter, Times Higher Education

Times Higher Education is seeking an experienced data reporter to join an award-winning publication with an expanding national and international audience. Candidates should have first-rate journalistic instincts and a strong track record of data journalism, allowing them to turn the wealth of data held by THE and sector organisations into compelling stories on our existing platforms, and to drive forward new data-driven content streams.

About us

Times Higher Education was founded in 1971 and, from its roots as a UK policy magazine, has developed into the world’s leading source of higher education news, analysis and data. Headquartered in London, it continues to publish a fortnightly print magazine and has a rapidly growing online audience, reaching an audience of around 30 million academics, higher education professionals and students every year. Key to this growth has been the development of our uniquely influential suite of university rankings, including the flagship THE World University Rankings. Higher education is a hugely rewarding area to cover, and as one of the fastest growing industries globally, THE has ambitious plans to continue to extend its reach and influence.

About the role

We are looking for a data expert who can generate ideas for data-driven stories and analysis, lead longer-term investigations and projects which have data at their core, produce visualisations of statistics for our online audience, and champion the use of data across our journalism. More broadly the successful candidate will form a key part of our reporting team, with their output including coverage of breaking news, comprehensive reporting on the policy agenda, and exclusive articles which capture readers’ attention at home and abroad. They will also write long-form features offering definitive takes on key talking points in higher education today.

Who you are

We are seeking a senior reporter with at least two years’ experience on a respected news outlet, who can demonstrate expertise in using data and statistics to create impactful journalism and in using data visualisation tools to communicate statistics to an online audience. Candidates should also have a strong track record in finding and breaking news stories, writing in-depth features and building strong contacts around a specified brief. We are seeking talented, enthusiastic and creative journalists with a nose for a story, strong writing skills, and the drive and commitment to contribute to a hard-working team. Prior experience covering education or research would be an advantage but is not essential.

To apply, please submit a CV and covering letter, including your salary expectations.
