Draft job ad for Sub Editor

Salary: £30,000-£40,000 based on capability level

About us:

Which? is the UK’s consumer champion, here to make life simpler, fairer and safer for everyone. Our research gets to the heart of consumer issues, our advice is impartial and our rigorous product tests lead to expert recommendations. We’re the independent consumer voice that influences politicians and lawmakers, investigates, holds businesses to account and makes change happen. As an organisation we’re not for profit and all for making consumers more powerful.

We are looking for a driven and self-motivated Sub Editor to join our experienced, supportive and fun team on a 12-month fixed-term contract. We’ve previously been named the best subbing and production team in the British Society of Magazine Editors annual talent awards and have just been shortlisted again.

You will work for an award-winning publisher across our five print magazines and digital content. Our flagship Which? magazine is one of the biggest consumer magazines in the country.

Your job will be to make sure everything we publish is of the best quality, engaging and relevant to our members and supporters, and is produced to deadline. We'll expect a lot of you, but you can expect just as much in return.

What is on offer?

A supportive team structure, the tools to grow and develop your career, and the opportunity to play your part in making consumers as powerful as the organisations they deal with.

In addition to a competitive salary, we offer 28 days holiday, life assurance and a fantastic pension scheme where we contribute 11% after just one year of service.

You will work hybridly out of our modern, relaxed and friendly London office with great facilities for cyclists and lunchtime runners, fresh fruit and a roof terrace to enjoy your lunch on.

Other benefits include Cycle to Work, season ticket loan scheme and childcare vouchers.

What will you do?

  • Sub and proofread product reviews, news stories and advice guides for our website, five print magazines, and other products and services as required.
  • Ensure content conforms to all relevant editorial guidelines and house style, and all work is carried out to agreed schedules.

You will

  • Be passionate about great writing and clarity of language, with superb attention to detail and advanced understanding of grammar and style rules.
  • Be calm under pressure and able to prioritise and balance the demands of a busy workload and numerous competing deadlines.
  • Have strong computer skills and experience with everyday software such as Word
  • Ideally be experienced with desktop publishing systems, although this is not essential
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Be excited about the opportunity to work with a range of writers, quick to form good working relationships and not afraid to give constructive feedback.

All our roles are now hybrid (a mix of working from home and office based) and we will supply you with the tools and technologies to enable you to do this. Similarly, all interviews will be conducted by Google Hangouts or equivalent video conferencing technologies.

About the rewards?

You get a competitive salary, 28 days' holiday, contributory pension, life assurance, private medical cover, health insurance, full Which? membership for free, and 50% off making a will with Which? Wills.

About the Which? way of life?

We want you to do great work and enjoy it in a workplace that respects and empowers you.
In 2019 we were a runner up in the medium-sized organisation category for Britain's Healthiest Workplace, and we’ve signed up to the Time to Change employer pledge that protects staff against mental health discrimination. We're also a Stonewall-accredited employer.

To apply please attach your CV and a covering letter outlining why you would be a good fit. Deadline: Sunday 12th June

At Which? we value diversity and we're committed to creating an inclusive culture where everyone is able to be themselves and to reach their full potential. We want to receive applications from all regardless of age, gender identity, disability, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity, religion or belief, race or ethnic origin, sex, sexual orientation, transgender status, social economic background etc. We believe that a diverse workforce helps us to understand and create a positive impact for consumers. We want to ensure that everybody can apply and be part of our recruitment processes, and therefore when required we make reasonable adjustments to accommodate our candidates.

Company

Working at Which? is all about balancing your expectations with ours – and that applies to everyone who works here. So what does this mean in practical terms? First of all, we’ll expect you to channel your ambition into growing our business and increasing our influence. We’ll also rely on you to stand up for what you believe in and have the courage to make the right calls.

In return, we’ll give you plenty of diverse opportunities at a company that’s growing, some great benefits and, most importantly, the chance to change peoples’ lives for the better. In short, if you can make a real difference to consumers and our members, we’ll make a real difference to your career. That way, everyone wins.
