Business News Editor

The Times is looking for a business news editor who has experience working on a news desk or as a reporter at a national publication.

Applicants will be expected to play a key role in developing The Times’s award-winning business coverage both digitally and in the newspaper, driving our coverage with enthusiasm.

We are looking for an ambitious journalist with an appetite for business news who has the ideas and skills to not only spot stories that others may miss but present them in new and innovative ways. Precise writing, commissioning and copy-editing are required, as is the ability to present them to the business editor and editor and work to tight deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Be a self-starter and develop strong news, feature and comment ideas for digital as well as print

  • Write and commission breaking news stories, features and Q&As

  • Assist in editing the business section on mobile, desktop and in the newspaper

  • Commission graphs, tables, video and other elements that can enhance the business coverage digitally and in the newspaper

  • Work some early mornings to cover stock exchange announcements and other breaking stories at the busiest time of day for business news

  • Occasionally attend conference to present the business section’s work to the editor and other departments

  • Help to develop the daily business news list alongside the rest of the business desk

  • Assist in the production of the morning and lunchtime business emails

  • Join the rota of senior team members who edit the print section on a Sunday

Skills and experience

  • Experience working as a reporter or editor for a leading website or national newspaper

  • Experience in digital and ideas of how to grow our digital audience 

  • Knowledge and experience of SEO 

  • Ability to use social media platforms to engage new audiences for The Times

  • Able to work autonomously and to strict deadlines

  • A strong understanding of editorial compliance and regulatory issues
