Head of communications, The Times and The Sunday Times

Maternity Cover - Up to 12 Months FTC

The Times and The Sunday Times are seeking a head of communications for a maternity cover contract.

The successful candidate will promote The Times and The Sunday Times journalism to readers in the UK and overseas on broadcast and digital outlets, and lead innovative PR initiatives and events.

The role requires a self-motivated, energetic individual who has extensive media experience and is used to operating within a senior management structure. Weekend working and unsociable hours may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a communications and media relations strategy, in print, digital and broadcast media
  • Liaise daily with journalists to drive the broadcast media programme for The Times and The Sunday Times. This includes all sections of the papers and covers scoops, exclusives, interviews, investigations and serialisations
  • Spokesperson for the paper on important editorial issues and responsibility for crisis management communications within the demanding and unpredictable daily news cycle
  • Build strong relationships with broadcasters and media contacts ensuring they have all the relevant information about our content, editorial teams and key selling points
  • Work closely with commercial departments to inform, shape and deliver ideas that help to promote The Times and The Sunday Times to readers and advertisers
  • Manage the speaker programme to ensure that the Editor of The Times, the Editor of The Sunday Times and its journalists speak at events, debates and conferences that target key audiences
  • Support annual events such as The Times CEO summit and Cheltenham Literary Festival

Skills and experience

  • Experience working in a senior communications role at a media company
  • Persuasive presentation skills, well-developed interpersonal skills, with the ability to solve problems and negotiate positive outcomes
  • Able to communicate succinctly and effectively
  • Experience of working collaboratively within a senior management structure
  • A strong understanding of editorial compliance and regulatory issues
