Editorial & Production Assistant - Special Issues - Job Description

Salary: £22k pa  

Country & Town House Special Issues is looking for a creative, organised and enthusiastic editorial and production assistant to work across C&TH special issues, with a focus predominantly on School House. Reporting to both the publisher of School House and the Managing Editor of Country & Town House, the production and editorial assistant’s key responsibility is to assist the School House editor in all respects and be responsible for helping write, sub-edit, manage and picture research the editorial content of School House (2 x per annum) and Scholarships & Bursaries (1x per annum), as well as write, upload and manage online content for and drives its social media channels. There is also client contact and administrative duties too. 

Additionally, the role is responsible for helping in the smooth production of other C&TH special issues, including Great British Brands, Interiors, Great British & Irish Hotels and Watches & Jewellery. 

The ideal candidate will have a genuine interest in magazines and education; be a problem solve and fast learner; have a keen eye for grammatical detail; enjoy working in a team but also independently; keen to take on responsibility and have excellent organisation skills.

  • Research and write allocated pages (news/features etc) for print editions of School House and Scholarships and Bursaries, as per editor’s instructions 
  • Source imagery for and sub-edit all School House editorial pages to style and deadline 
  • Manage an image library for School House going forward and ask each school to send a selection of photographs as and when 
  • Source and schedule content for School House’s social media channels: Twitter, Linkedin, Facebook & Instagram, including tweeting all open days. Content dependent, aim to post once a day on each platform.    
  • Plan, produce, write, upload and update content for School House online on a daily basis. Create an editorial calendar with new features, uploads and updates planned in.  
  • Manage distribution and send out additional copies (including C&TH magazines to maximise cross-advertising opportunities) 
  • Copy chase up, collate and prepare all School House templates, listings and advertorials for print 
  • Keep schools’ online listings up to date 
  • Upload templates and features on to the website as and when required (post press) 
  • Attend press events/trips where relevant for School House and C&TH, as required 
  • Sub-edit, write captions and action client editorial amendments for C&TH supplements including Great British Brands, Interiors Guide and Great British & Irish Hotels

  • Ensure through tracking and monitoring, as per the C&TH mission statement, that 20% of SH print and social content is purposed towards promoting practices, businesses, products, companies and initiatives around sustainability
  • In collaboration with the editor, ensure wider representation of voices in print (interviewees, writers etc) within the editorial mission and content purpose of C&TH (15% target)

Skills, Qualifications & Experience


  • Attention to visual design, textual and grammatical detail
  • Basic use of Excel  
  • Able to generate relevant, engaging editorial ideas for School House online and in print
  • Confident writing and editing interesting, clear and precise copy
  • Calm, professional and reliable under pressure
  • Good interpersonal, networking and communication skills
  • Strong organisational skills – able to prioritise workload and remain flexible during busy times
  • Confident working independently, taking initiative when required


  • Experience using WordPress, Campaign Monitor/360 and social media platforms
  • Basic use of Indesign & photoshop
  • Genuinine interest in education
