Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is seeking a video journalist to produce timely business and markets videos as part of its social news video team.

Top candidates for this position will have a professional background in video journalism and demonstrate exceptional shooting and editing skills. In this role you will be expected to juggle many tasks under deadline pressure, with a primary focus on producing daily videos on news and market coverage. An ability to react quickly and bring challenging topics to life visually are essential for this position.

Please note, this is not an entry-level position, and it is not a position producing documentaries. This role is focused on producing daily news and markets coverage. Candidates need to show successful executions of projects that have been done in just a few hours and stand out in the 24/7 information cycle. Experience with social media news and vertical video are a must.

This position will report to the Supervising Producer for Social News Video and will be based in our London office.

All interested candidates should submit a cover letter clearly outlining how their skills and experience meet or exceed the key candidate requirements, along with links to five videos that represent the type of work described. Candidates who do not submit cover letters will not be considered.

You will:

  • Pitch original ideas and angles for daily news videos and mini explainers on market trends, complementing WSJ coverage in other formats and bringing smart analysis to wider audiences.
  • Produce, shoot and edit timely news and markets coverage on a daily basis
  • Adapt feature and enterprise stories into video for social audiences.
  • Ensure that all Wall Street Journal journalistic and legal standards are followed at all times in all projects.
  • Uphold the team's high video production quality standards at all times while creatively using shooting and editing techniques to keep improving on fast-turn daily videos.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned.

You have:

  • At least three years of experience working in a daily news environment
  • An ability to work early mornings, late hours, U.S. and U.K. holidays and weekends as part of a regular rotation and as news developments may warrant.
  • A grasp of financial data visualization best practices for video.
  • Demonstrated experience producing compelling business, markets and tech videos under tight deadline constraints.
  • Knowledge of current events in the U.S. and around the world, with a focus on markets, politics and economics, as well as a nose for news and social media trends.
  • Professional competency editing with Adobe Premiere, including audio.
  • A good understanding of graphics tools such as AfterEffects, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
  • Skills with multiple camera setups, including but not limited to the Sony FS5, FS7, C100 and C300.
  • Expertise with studio lighting and newsroom shoot setups.
  • Clear communicator with exceptional written and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to remain nimble, pivot and multitask when necessary; the ideal candidate should be able to work autonomously and pitch original video takes that distill complicated concepts to make them accessible.
  • Field experience arranging shoots, filming interviews, and the technical expertise to remotely transfer material back to the bureau are a plus.
