Job Details

The Role

The applicant will have extensive knowledge of the courts system and its operation, in particular the higher courts (Court of Appeal and Supreme Court), and ability to draw on contacts among legal professionals and court staff to source exclusive stories.

  • High level of media law knowledge so as to navigate potential legal pitfalls (including reporting restrictions and threat of litigation) and be able to obtain key documents.
  • Deep understanding of wider impact of court system on the legal profession (e.g. spotting trends in litigation) in order to produce longer reads and features
  • Ability to sift through daily court and tribunals lists, evaluating potential stories and prioritising most promising leads.
  • Good leadership and communications skills in order to assist other Gazette editorial staff with court-related issues, including delegating court reporting to colleagues and assisting with legal and related queries
  • Ability to undertake a wide range of additional reporting duties in tandem with the above.


What we're looking for


Qualified and experienced reporter with excellent shorthand, with solid news-gathering experience. Experience of law and legal profession, or a legal qualification, an advantage.
