Trainee Investigative Reporter

£35,148 to £40,404 per annum
(We normally offer a starting salary at the start of the range)
Full-time (37.5h) / Permanent
Based in Islington, London

Greenpeace is an international non-profit global campaigning organisation. Our independence and global reach enable us to stand for positive change through action in order to defend nature and promote peace. We investigate and expose global environmental problems, confront those in positions of power and present alternative solutions.

Unearthed, Greenpeace’s award winning in-house journalism unit, is looking to hire a new trainee investigative reporter to join our team of investigative environmental journalists and editors.

Closely following the news agenda for issues of political, social and environmental significance, you’ll work with our reporters to develop and execute in-depth investigations on topics that could include anything from Brexit and deregulation to deforestation in the Amazon or Europe’s pesticide sales in the global South.

You’ll have the scope to develop and deliver your own investigative stories, with support and supervision from more experienced journalists. This will involve learning to use tools such as Freedom of Information requests, public records searches, data-led investigation, satellite imagery and ship tracking, as well as cultivating and interviewing sources and field research. In doing so, you’ll be expected to handle everything from filing information accurately to carefully analysing technical documents or arranging the logistics for an overseas video shoot.

As part of our commitment to tackling systemic racism and class discrimination we are encouraging applicants of backgrounds that are under-represented in the media. You can read more on that here.

Location: Islington, London. We are currently trialling a hybrid working model to enjoy the benefits of both office based and remote working. The current expectation is for staff to work from the office in Islington at least 40% of their time. Reasonable adjustments to the trial policy as well as specific office based needs will be considered for those with long term health conditions and disabilities.

Requirements

You'll have:

  • News sense: Demonstrable ability to spot news angles and leads, and to ask the right journalistic questions.
  • Storytelling: Demonstrable ability to write clear, concise, and compelling copy, that is well-structured and accurate.
  • Proven experience of breaking off-diary stories and scoops, or of conducting in-depth, impactful research into complex topics.
  • A demonstrable ability to work independently, showing initiative, tenacity and attention to detail, as well as a willingness to unpick complex and intellectually challenging issues.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with other team members, media partners and other stakeholders, demonstrating curiosity, empathy and an open approach.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to keep long-term projects moving forward while also handling shorter-term deadlines.
  • Demonstrable interest in environmental and environmental justice issues, and commitment to tackling systemic racism and class-based discrimination.

We give you:

You’ll be encouraged to develop both personally and professionally, taking advantage of the wide range of learning and development opportunities available to our staff. We offer great benefits such as a generous pension scheme, subsidised lunches, free yoga and a wealth of well-being resources, just to name a few. Take a look at our Work for Greenpeace pages to find out more about what it’s like to work for us and why you should apply.

Our commitment to diversity:

At Greenpeace UK we are committed to advancing diversity, inclusion, equity and becoming anti-racist. We acknowledge that people from certain backgrounds are under-represented in environmental and campaigning organisations and want to do all we can to correct this. In particular, we want to be more representative of Britain’s diversity at senior levels of GPUK. If you have the skills we need and are a person of colour, disabled, LGBTQIA, non-binary, have a mental health condition, or if you identify as working class now or in the past, we would welcome an application from you.
